I am sure a lot of you have or do see a psychiatrist, and I know they prescribe meds but what is the point in seeing one if your regular doctor prescribes them? I guess I am asking because I have always just went to my primary for my depression meds, and now my therapist wants me to see a psychiatrist every 2 weeks for medication. But what is the idea that I need to see one for? I am on the max dose of my current medication, and have tried many others I guess I just don't see the point in going to someone else for this. Yes I know psychiatrist are trained in mental health and the drugs used for them.

Exactly. A psychiatrist is more likely to be more familiar with the drugs, the dosages, and the combinations that can relieve mental symptoms. A GP is certainly competent, but might not be the most skilled person to do the prescribing. A lot of GPs in my area will not prescribe mental health rugs and refer you to a psychiatrist for that reason.

If you are happy with your general doctor, you do not have to switch of course, but it might be useful to have a few consulation appointments with the psychiatrist to see if his recommendations are any different.
