I think many get confused between these, and what their purposes are.

A shoutbox, being chat box in the right sidebar of the forum home and also available from the shoutbox navigation tab, is a shoutbox. It can be used as a chat, but it is a shoutbox. That means, you could post something into it, go away, come back, and hopefully someone has responded. You could, if you remained in it, wait for the response and then chat like you would normally.

Chatroom, is available from the footer bar, far left hand side icon, which you can create a public or private chatroom, and go for it, live.

Instant Messages - Part of the chat bar, Facebook style IM chat which is realtime if a user is online or not, (right side of the footer bar) unlike the member online menu, which is session based. There is a vast difference between the two. One is actually online now, physically looking at the forum, the other is, you are logged into a session, but may not be looking at the forum right now, ie. looking at another webpage, working in another program, etc.

Personal Conversations - Outlined in the help video forum. (They are a static conversation that a person responds when they feel, if they feel)
