I don't know that all cops get that any cop who abuses a member of the public is making it harder and more dangerous to do their jobs.
The good ones get that. The ones that cause the problems most likely don't. And that's part of the problem.

It's the same for any other "group". I'm female and have generally worked in male dominated fields. It's been pretty clear that, if I screwed up, that screw up was going to be owned by everyone of my gender going forward. But, if I did ok, then I was an exception. I think that same mind set get applied to any group that anyone sees as "the other". And maybe we'd all be better served if we quit looking at people as being part of a group and looked at them as individual people instead.

told the officer he had a concealed weapon and he was reaching into in pocket for his wallet. The officer shot him four times with his girlfriend and young child in the car. The girlfriend recorded everything Live on Facebook

murder of her fiancee for NO GOOD REASON

Let's back up a minute. We don't know what happened before the recording started. There are lot of assumptions being made. I would never say bad things have never happened and I'm concerned about the situation too. I think it would be best to not jump to conclusions. I think it's best we take a breath and let the investigators find out what happened. If people want to protest I can understand why and that's what makes America great but let's not make statements that just add to the rumors.

I'll be praying for peace and that justice be done.

Hits close to home considering I live in Dallas and my brother lives near downtown/participated in the protest. I hope this tragedy will at least help move along the dialouge about gun control in this country instead of being misconstrued to belittle the black lives matter movement. Prayers for the victims and their families .

It sucks that one irrational, ignorant idiot can just steal somone's life like that because in their head they think that they're carrying out some vigilante form of justice. Makes me sick to my stomach.

Yes, agreed. Police officers and their individual actions being held accountable for murder, no different than anyone else. And then who else has the legal resources and $ for defense of murder, very few. Tax payer payments for Tamir Rice, $6 Million. Payouts. Not justice.

Dallas born/raise and recently moved back Black who was taught at an early age, appropriately, to COMPLY. I'm scared. Always. And I have had several occasions to have my fears reiterated. I mourn EVERY death. We are ALL victims. In my PERSONAL opinion the conversations everyone suggests we have country wide must include an honest conversation about race. Racism exists and affects every aspect of our lives be it directly or indirectly.
Please don't attack me on this site. The fact that I'm scared to even post this comment speaks volumes. I already suffer severely from PTSD.

@Bill Dickerson - I agree that we can't declare a national problem over one bad incident. I like your measured approach.

And this isn't one bad incident. The stats nationwide are overwhelming.

Most people are not racist and most officers do an excellent job. But there are some who do a terrible job and there is very little functional accountability systems in law enforcement. That needs to change.

@I_will_recover - I hope you keep sharing.

Exactly, JMH. I like your approach, too, Bill, and appreciate that we really should wait for all the facts to come out. But, tragically, this kind of thing really does happen a lot to black people. Maybe not always so far as getting killed, but definitely getting singled out by police and often abused. I guess I feel it's pretty reasonable to assume that this case isn't any different. I mean, we've all seen a good chunk of what happened. We know quite a bit about who Philandro Castile was -- a good, hardworking, valued and loved member of the community. And I Will Recover says what I know from my black friends. They were all taught to comply, comply, comply, and have taught their children, especially sons, the same thing. Do whatever the officer tells you to. Don't ever give them any reason to think you are a threat. I saw Castile's mother being interviewed and saying the exact same thing. And to all available evidence, Castile did just that. It is sadly a very important part of black culture in this country.

Castile and the girlfriend fit a BOLO for a convenience store robbery... the girlfriend's live stream was mirror imaged making it look like she was in the driver's seat when he was. He had no concealed weapon's permit to carry in that county but may have in another. And that's just for starters. I expect the "truth" on Castile is somewhere in the middle. It was not a traffic stop for a broken tail light though as his girlfriend suggested. I hope, though that on investigation thoroughly, that justice will be served either way.

One of the Dallas shooters had an alias and it looks like he's been connected to the New Black Panthers (a member at one time). The facts are starting to come out. Again, thorough investigation and hopefully justice will be served either way. In the meantime, it's open season on people who want to take a shot at a cop and THAT is what does not help the Black Lives Matter movement. Black lives do matter... but this conscripting of a peaceful movement and inciting and escalating to violence... well, it's gonna hurt their cause. That's a dang shame.
