My name is Curt Strangward and I am a post-graduate student at the University of Glasgow and I wish to seek permission to use information on your forum as part of a research project.

Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this research is to describe and understand how nightmares following a traumatic event effect individual’s sleep and the effect this has on their wellbeing and day-to-day life.

Research has investigated the effect of trauma on people’s sleep and wellbeing, but not specifically the effect of nightmares. Some researchers have uncovered a possible link between nightmares and poor sleep in post-traumatic stress disorder and it lasting longer in some people. Further, poor sleep is linked with poor physical and mental health, and also poorer wellbeing.

Why you?
You have posted on a forum related to post-traumatic stress disorder and discussed having nightmares and their effect on your life.

How you help
The information you provide can be used to help understand what people in a similar situation to you might experience. It will also help understanding of how nightmares and sleeping problems might affect people with post-traumatic stress disorder.

What will be involved?
You have talked about your experiences of having nightmares and what that has meant for your life. By taking part in the study, you allow the researchers to use your description of what it meant for you.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?
Any collected information about you during the course of the research will be kept confidential. Your username will be changed to another name to help keep your confidentiality.

What will happen to the results of the research study?
All of the results of the study will be used for research, part of an Masters degree at the University of Glasgow.

Who is organising and funding the research?
There is no external financial contribution to this study.

Who has reviewed the study?
The project has been reviewed and accepted by the College of Science and Engineering Research Ethics Committee, at the University of Glasgow.
