New Here
Hello everyone - I've just interviewed Anthony Parsons for a feature I'm writing for the Sydney Morning Herald about PTSD, and he suggested I post a request for interviewees here. The majority of stories in the media about people with PTSD are about soldiers. I think it's important to look at the other much larger group whose stories don't usually get told - women of all ages, male teenagers and non-combatants - to raise public awareness of the scale of PTSD. I'm hoping some people on this website can share their stories with me. Anonymity is guaranteed if you don't want to go on the record. Anthony will be posting my contact details in the thread.

I have wondered if I am among the case studies which created the current PTSD theories. I lived the evolution but remain very frustrated in not being able to track the particulars through pro channels.

The US pulled out of Viet Nam in Spring of 1973. In that era, US military recruiters were some of the loneliest people on the planet. They had time to do mission work. They found me on the streets of Detroit and had time to help me get from a mal-nourished throw away kid to meeting minimum requirements for enlistment. Quite a journey in itself. I entered boot camp and started formal therapy with Army shrinks in August, 1973. I was far from the only member of my platoon with this story to tell. PTSD was not an official diagnosis at this time, far less cPTSD.

During my three years in the Army, most of my therapists had served in Viet Nam. I was diagnosed with "Trauma Induced Amnesia." I continued my therapy through the VA. I did not run into the moniker of PTSD until the mid 90s. At the VA, of course.

Just wondering if your story might fill in some herstory gaps...

Oh, I see from Anthony's other post that you are only looking for Australians to interview. That's me out then.
