The Canadian System

I got another request today to join in and protest the Canadain Veterans Bill of Rights. All aspects of the process seem to be under attack. From the claims and appeals process to the compensation package. Am I missing something?

In a nut shell;

I initially launched my claims for physical injuries August 2010. It took 7 months to be seen by the Doctors at Veterans Affairs, at which time THEY suggested I see the Mental Health folks, booked my appointments for me, assigned me a case manager to help me fill out my claims, and sent my medical files off for review.

It took another 3 months for my claims for physical injuries to be processed, and I received a 43% rating, worth $83,000. We do not have a monthly disability payment here, but I was able to put most of that down on my morgage, thus decreasing my monthly bills by about $500 a month.

By June / July I had an appointment with Mental health, and was Diagnosed with PTSD in Sept 2011. Again, Veterans affairs Canada Signed me up for a rehab program. Income replacement topping my pension up to 75% of my pre retirement earnings until I complete therapy and rejoin the work force. I didn't even know there was a rehab program. I didn't have to fight or beg.

Veterans affairs then sent me a health card that pays 100% of all health care costs for all service related injuries. They have contacted therapists on my behalf, and are paying for all sessons until I am deamed treated.

Then Veterans Affairs offered to pay for Re-Education. Up to a 2 year program in any field I am deamed suited for, Tuition, Books and income suppliment until completed. I am not doing the re-education yet as THEY think I should finish therapy before I start. No rush, no pressure, just "we're here when you're ready."

If a civilian were injured on the job in Canada, I doubt their compensation package would even come close to what I have received so far. So why is everyone up in arms here in Canada?

The old Veterans Charter allowed for Medical Pensions. An injury that was assessed at 43% (like mine) would result in a 43% payment of your former wage on top of your pension, whether you were able to return to work or not. That would mean that I'd be getting 83% total (when my service pension was factored in) for the rest of my life. Would the extra money be helpful? Maybe. Would the thought of sitting at home for the rest of my life, with no hope of getting back into the work force, no rehab and no re-training be worth the extra 8%? Come on guys! If I am never deemed rehabilitated I will still receive 75% for the rest of my life. But I have hope. Hope is something the old system seemed to lack. And the other bonuses (therapy, rehab, retraining) cost far more than that 8%.

I guess that it is human to want more. But when I read about the struggles of our American Brothers, for recognition and treatment, I thank God I am Canadian. The only 2 issues I have with our system are:

1) It's slow. No one seems to be pushing to speed up the process.

2) It's dependant on your former wage. Why should I get more then some poor Private with a wife and 2 kids at home just because I was lucky enough to make Sargeant before I retired?

No, I am Canadian. I am proud to have served, and happy that our citizens have recognised our service with a very transparent and fair compensation package. My experiences so far have been of a system that cares for my well being. Maybe I've been lucky. Perhaps I've just had the right people working on my file. Perhaps PTSD is the flavour of the day, and I have received preferential treatment. What ever the case, Veterans Affairs have done right by me, and I will not sully their names.

Altho' a strong critic of our American VA, I have to admit that many Veterans here are perfectly happy with our VA. My big gripe is with the VA med center I go to, it's just filled with some pretty lousy employees. But again, I've heard really good things about VA's elsewhere.

As far as claims go, our system is so broken. We have an almost one million claims backlog. They keep putting little band-aids on it and it remains just as broken. And there is a very identifiable reason, our government doesn't want to pay for us. They'd rather be building bridges to nowhere.

And then it boils down even further to America's inane belief that we are the world's police force. We get some dumb-assed little nation throw rocks at the American embassy and we immediately throw in the Marines. Then we get into some long, protracted and deadly war with them, totally decimate their country, rebuild it to better standards than we have at home, leave it and they go right back to doing what they were doing before.

Until our government understands that the cost of war doesn't end when the last soldier has left the battlefield but lingers far longer, I don't see it getting any better.

I wish there was a representative body that did as much, as willingly, for Brits. And thank you for relating a good standard. I am glad, not that you were placed in the situation, but once there, there was such a comprehensive system.
Let's hope it all comes up to such a level, and that there's some breathing space soon.

I must admit you Guys, it is nice to see a thread on the VA that isn`t bithcing about them.

I can see your point ZIP mate. They done good for you so why drag them through the dirt. And as far as Sarg said, ok the system is broken (Got to take your word on that) but atleast there is a system there, like Ned said, there is nothing even close for us Brits.

The stiff upper lip that lets us queue for anything with out moaning, yeah there should be more done but then I think that is the problem, We don`t get anything and thats the way it is, so we don`t complain.

my only complaint right now is that I have to settle for 2 year program that I have to get a DIPLOMA for, unfortunately degrees are where it's at in the employment world right now I been trying to work out a deal where they pay the 2 yrs and I pay the rest alas no dice it seems yet. my field im thinking about jumping in(social work) is going to require a degree soon for any useful place of employment. From a guy who wants to get back to work asaps point of view its a pain. I know the liberals were campaigning on changing it to 4 years of school but we know how their campaign went lol anyway I have no complaints with our system yet just stressing myself out over the details right now.

Some 2 year programs can be used as credits toward a 4 year degree. My neice has done several in the social work* field. Now she's taking her masters.

Hey Zip

The Canadian systems knows what's it's all aboot. I think they've got the right idea in many areas. And Sarg is spot on about our system. Wish I didn't have to agree with him, but I do. It's all true.

I just read today about a drone going down in Afganastan somewhere in the desert. They don't know why. It costs 73 million dollars, 73 million. Then they sent a sorte to destroy what was left so the 'enemy' doesn't get it. That probably cost a couple mill more. But Hell we don't have money for vets or health care. Am I missing something???

The problem with the Australian military is the $$ they get for serving in an operational area. Some stupid amount of money (basically danger money) and the rest of their wage 'tax free'.
I can understand them being paid a little extra as they take us away from our family for an extended amount of time, but some guys are deploying just for the extra dollars. They do three tours then come home and wonder what the f*ck is wrong with them. At that stage they lose everything anyway.
Once they Aussies are brought home next year, within six months there is going to be mass discharges as there is no extra dollars and soldiers will be bored.
