The Cliches That Make Me Want To Scream

I agree that for the most part people are well intentioned when they use these cliches but they are still irritating and can feel dismissive. However, I also think there are times when it is intentional.
I do think it is healthy to laugh about these frustrations. Laughter has a way of taking the sting out of them. The combacks are really funny.

I keep thinking about this thread, LOL. I'll add 2!

Take a deep breath!

and

Get a hobby!

Of course these are from a supporter's perspective and things a Social Worker or Psychologist has suggested as how to deal with things, LOL

Hmmmm, a hobby. I think I will do rock collecting. Mostly as a way to "collect" ammunition. :)

I hate most: "Other people are far worse off than you".
Yeah, maybe, sure but that doesn't make it a bit better for me, it just banalizes what happened, my feelings.I shouldn't have been hurt by something like that so I'm not allowed to suffer. Superb.
How bad has it to be to be "acceptable"? It never seems to be worse enough to count for anybody.
There are also other people who are far better off than me, so what?

'What doesn't kill you makes you stronger'...after everything I've been through in the abuse and leaning to live with the aftermath, all I can say is I don't feel stronger. All I've felt is tired, flawed and ready to give up sometimes. But hey, thanks for being so supportive. *rolling eyes*

"It's his own fault, he brought it all on himself. He deserves all he gets"

WTF. Yep that was a comment from a very, very close family member. Not spoken to her for a few years, and she wonders why.

Not had chance or the inclination to come up with a come back to that yet.

"When life gives you lemons you make lemonade"

Really?

How about "When life gives you lemons say you've been given enough lemons and would like to see what else life has in stock for once."

Or maybe "I'm not running a lemonade stand."

Seriously every time someone says the lemon cliche It makes me want to make them to spontaneously combust using my glare of doom.

Amen to that. I'm 26 and to be honest I feel like I'm in my late 40s.

As for the lemon cliche, I've got a friend who always says: When life throws you lemons, chuck them back and yell "Make your own damn lemonade!"

The ones that really get to me though, are the ones that are like "There's always someone out there who has it worse", "You're not the only one with problems", etc., etc., etc. As missionary, I just wanna rip my eyes out of my sockets at those. I just think "Really? Do you really think I don't know how sucky other people have it? Do you really think the whole summer I spent in third world countries, I was completely oblivious to the families of 16 living in cardboard houses the size of my dorm room? Do you REALLY believe that I give up my time and money to help people that I think are better off than me?"

Ugh. Roar. People irritate me.

As if other people having it worse is supposed to make us feel better right? I guess they do that to make us feel guilty about feeling bad since there is so much suffering in the world. Can't say I ever felt guilty about someone else's misfortune unless I'm the direct cause of it. We're entitled to feel like crap if we have a reason for it. Besides, if our misfortunes did anything good for us is that it separates our true friends from the pretenders. I guess that's why I have only 2 friends in my life :roflmao:

... only postpones the inevitable.
... makes you wish it did.
Don't know where these are from, but they're too true to be good.

What doesn't kill you narrows down the list towards the things that can kill you.

I hate the cliche "Grab the bull by the horns and run with it".

I am a 170 lb 5 ft 9 man, and the bull is around 17-2300 lbs of pure muscle. Why the f**k would I want to do that? My problems are equally as bad; that's why I'm seeking outside help.

One other cliche that I used a lot in the past but started hating is "It could be worse". Don't you think I know it can be worse? Doesn't really matter when the present sucks pretty hard as is.

There are as many shallow people in the world as the ocean is deep and these shallow people may use a cliche to shut somone up when they don't want to hear what you have to say. Many are too wrapped up in their own little world to spare the time or even give a damn about anyone elses feelings, but will be the first to cry when things don't go their own way.
