" People who don't have PTSD have no real idea what it is, what it does to you and how it affects everything in your life."

Its a difficult concept to explain to some. I got crapped out today when I tried to explain the feeling of isolation and lonelyness that seems to preceed suicidal thoughts (and planning). So much for opening up and starting to share! Then the "headrush" started and I had to just try to keep it together for the kids sake. Thats all thats holding me on course at present. I try to focus on that one positive. Guess that is what most in this kind of situation should try to do.

It is very tough to explain to people. I remember before I deployed when I heard about people attempting suicide I always thought how can somebody think that there isn't any way out until my PTSD and now I have been able to understand why some have attempted suicide. Luckily reasons to not attempt suicide come into my mind but after trying to get my wife to understand to even the smallest amount that she won't fully understand unless she ends up getting ptsd which I hope never happens so its kind of like a coin on one side you want people to understand but on the other side you are kind of glad that they don't fully understand.

It feels like your banging your head against a brick wall trying to get some understanding. Worst part is that if your loved ones and friends have a better understanding the process of recovery will probably be easier. Without that its viscious cycle of resentment and hurt. How to get yhem on board is the question and I suppose that differs from person to person. The poeple close to you are also going through a tough time and struggle to understand what is happening. Not easy for anybody but if other poeple can do it, maybe so can the rest of us.

Hey Louisv

It's hard enough for us to get a grasp of it all, so it's understandable that even our friends and loved ones can't. Also, people deal with things in many ways, one is denial. We've all been there. The sad truth is that as much as we may want our loved ones to understand what we're going through they just might not.

You have to do the things that help you and keep you here. The pain of all this can be overwhelming at times. If you get to that point call the help line, it will help. I'm glad you made it back, the struggle isn't over. Take little steps, and each day, hour, minute as it comes. The people here will help you in any way we can. You're not alone.
