MSNBC doesn't even know there's a hurricane!

One reason why I cannot stand MSNBC!

Just found out about the equifax crap and I was sent into an episode

I saw it got hacked. Does that tie into Trump some how? I was just curious as I am out of touch with everything right now.

How about Trump force Duke Energy to do their f*cking job and get us some power! I feel like we live in a 3rd world country right now!

We have MSNBC on all the time. During the hurricanes, there was constant coverage. They had reporters all over Florida and the Caribbean. There is still regular coverage practically every hour on the aftermath.

ETA: Though they bill themselves as the place for politics, they put off significant political news to cover the hurricanes.

@hodge. MSNBC did an awesome job on both hurricanes with their coverage. When Irma started hitting they had CONTINUANCE coverage for days on end....they hardly did commercials, and did like 30 second news breaks. They had reporters everywhere in Florida. Basically the same for Harvey....

Bullshit saying that MSNBC didn't even know about the hurricane.....

Yeah, @She Cat. It got to be so depressing and awful, I actually wanted to see more political news just to get away from the natural horrors of Harvey and Irma, even though the political news is often depressing and awful, too. Sigh. The thing about these hurricanes that drives me crazy is being unable to help, either physically or financially. I still have my mind, such as it is, and my heart, but I yearn for the days when I could do and did so much more. I'm only 54 freaking years old! Gah. Never mind.

Knowing there are still people out there helps, a lot. I have seen the exact opposite all around me. It's healthy people taking from those of us just a tad slower and never looking back. Has happened to me several times now. Someone jumped clear over Chopper, landing on one leg between me and an elderly lady in an electric cart, to get the last loaf of bread. I am still seeing that crap all around me. A lady came sideways and took the last pack of D Cell batteries about 6 inches from my nose. Her hand made it there and never looked back. Crap like that. It's disgusting!

So many with power but own generators never caring to loan them out or even rent them out. The hotel sites are who can click first. So many with power that don't offer up their couch.

When I was in Charley, we had power and 30+ of my ex's coworkers were sleeping on my floor, eating my food, and drinking my water. But it seems this world has devovled into out running each other and taking from each other and never caring to lend a hand to someone horribly suffering.

yes to feeling 146!

Yep!

Not really. There is not much a president can do about a private company having a cyber security crisis. Congress could pass tighter laws for such companies to try to prevent such an issue, but the monetary hit to equifax will motive the other two major credit data companies to do more than they already do, I hope.

I know you are suffering greatly. As someone who has lived in 3rd world countries, and in a FEMA disaster zone in the US, I get ya. I also know that dictatorship leadership does not actually tend to solve issues like this at all. It usually makes them worse. I have never actually seen or read if a solid exception to a dictatorship providing superior natural disaster relief aid than what the US does. Such a dictatorship, where a president could force private companies to provide more good and services than they already do, tends to make things worse.

There is nothing Trump could do to "force" such a power company to repair things more quickly right now. I have a family member that worked for a power company like Duke Energy. When such a disaster or crisis that any part of the power grid goes down, most employees, even the engineers for the company, pull 20 hour days,100+ hour work weeks (my family member slept at his office)!until the electricity is back on. It's partly economic, it's also party moral. My own family member was somewhat up in the company and lost sleep worrying about elderly and disabled folks without electricity. Disasters are disasters because they exceeed the ability of many to cope without loss and suffering.

I think there is a real danger in people looking towards one person to solve all problems in the US, or any nation. Trump has much blame for many issues. The power being off for longer than expected after a hurricane? Nah, he's not that powerful as to be able to cause or prevent or stop that problem.

MSNBC coverage, heck all cable news coverage, can range from region to region, time of day, means of watching it. It's perfectly reasonable that those who saw lots of coverage and those that saw little coverage on MSNBC are stating true and accurate statements about what they saw on MSNBC.

I'm not blaming Trump. Just venting I guess

But wouldn't I see a Duke Energy truck somewhere doing something? I've seen none. Zero. OUC restored all their customers and Orlando had it worse then Altamonte.

I just don't get why everyone else around me has power and we don't and other then some limbs down (that were no where near power lines) there was no damage. A neighbor said 3 transformers blew but most keep transformers handy, from my research anyway, due to common lightening strikes to them.

I'm just overly frustrated. OUC and FPL were on it. Duke? Nope.

Yeah, people gotta vent at times when crap happens. If I was in your shoes, I'd be pissed too and probably asking the same questions.

I think it's important to be mindful venting doesn't turn into blaming or expecting one political figurehead to fix it.

Germany went through hell after WW1. People were starving. Desperate. That's how they got to the point of voting to put Hitler into office. I'm not comparing your very reasonable venting to Nazi germany... but on a politics thread, I'm trying to point out that the normal and reasonable human desire to find someone responsible and someone to blame can sometimes grow into something very dangerous on a mass scale.
But wouldn't I see a Duke Energy truck somewhere doing something? I've seen none. Zero. OUC restored all their customers and Orlando had it worse then Altamonte.
Outages can be due to reasons other than what a truck can quickly fix. There can also be a shortage of trucks and simple manpower to get around to it all.

An example: Many states freaked out behind the scenes about Y2K and expected massive power outages... because of software glitches alone. No natural disasters. Thankfully, there weee not widespread issues, but that's just one example of how keeping the lights on involved a lot more than just power lines being up. Lots of systems have to be up, running, adequately staffed, safety checks done. I see no reason to believe that's Duke is maliciously or lazily just ignoring your needs. There is no economic or other reason to motivate them to do that. No power means they lose millions if not billions in revenue every day.

Your acedotal experience that FPL and OUC are turning on the power more quickly is your neighborhood doesn't hold true for the crisis state wide. NPR recently reported, "As of Wednesday morning, Florida Power and Light said 1.9 million of its customers were still without electricity, having restored service to 2.5 million out of 4.4 customers impacted by Irma." (From: Power Outages Persist For Millions In Florida, Georgia And Carolinas After Irma.) That's roughly the same rate of power still being out for FPL customers as Duke customers on that same date, three days ago.

Turning this back to the topic of this thread, US politics, it's easy for all Americans to think the situation on their doorstep is the same for people across the country - when it is not.

This is why I wish we would reduce the power of the federal government and give more power back to local and state governments who can know the situation on the ground better - everything from health care to education.
