How much do you think media coverage affects this sort of thing? There seems to be a competition of a sort.

I've got a very interesting book on mass killings in the US. First, there are several definitions. The most common type is actually one family member kills other family members and,, quite likely, themselves. Those are common enough that the usually only make the local news.

Usually the perp is more than angry. They are frustrated, desperate, feel they're disrespected, etc.

So, maybe we need to create a culture where people aren't treated as "other"? Where people feel respected and that there are ways they can be heard?

The whole thing right now with the focus on "mental illness" and mass shootings is one more way of making the perp's "other". I don't know that that helps.

Women are angrier than men? In all likelihood. I'm certainly pretty pissed off right now. That said, it is the men who are doing the killing.

I am relieved that my state does not support armed guards at schools. The good guy with the gun gets the bad guy with a gun? Yet another oversimplification. As an educator, and I speak on behalf of my colleagues as well, as we have had endless discussions on this matter since Newtown, I do not want guns at my school. And that 62% of stated Americans who do? I'll bet most of them aren't teachers.

That statistic is from 2013. And I don't buy into the 62% either. I know too many educators in too many capacities.

The idea of armed guards in schools is pretty extreme. There are lots of places this stuff could happen. Movie theatres? Shopping malls? Churches?

When you start thinking "armed guards and metal detectors" ask yourself what kind of place you want to live in. And don't say "safe" because there is no such thing. A totalitarian dictatorship is pretty safe, as long as you don't want to think and act for yourself. Iraq, under Saddam, was "safe" for everyone not on his radar screen. But I'm not sure that's a direction we want to go. I know i don't.

Seems to me the real problem isn't the weapon of choice, it's that fact that some people want to do these things. How sou we change THAT?

Armed teachers are now in some schools in Texas. I watched it on the news last night. Teachers are picked out by the principal of the school, they are then interviewed by the police. They go throu psych testing, and then 3-5 days of shooting practice. Then they interviewed and ex army guy and he wasn’t impressed at all by any of the training or interviewing at all.

All this does is put more guns in places that we are trying to keep guns out of.

Over 1/3 of states allow teachers to be armed
Because they allow it, doesn't mean that it's happening, and if it is I'll bet it's in the red states and supported by the NRA. And again, the sources you quote don't quite add up for me.

Here's what I imagine a reasonable beginning looking like:

14 day waiting period
No sales by private owners
No sales at gun shows
10 rounds magazine limit
No bump stocks
No cranks
Licenses for all arms
Child lock requirements
Minimum age of purchase at 21
Assault rifle ban
Universal background checks
Domestic violence ban

It’s such a reasonable staring point with the points that you have outlined. Trump rolled back Obama’s regulation on not allowing the severely mentally ill to NOT have access to guns. Now, they are allowed to buy guns. How does this help with the way he now blames the mentally ill shooting people??? I just don’t understand how any of this is helpful.

He blames the mentally ill and yet he allows them to buy guns. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
