Another great place to buy mattresses are the outlet stores that sell discontinued, mismatched fabric, & 30 day tried & returned mattresses (professionally sterilised, and won’t be accepted damaged or stained in any way).
I got a $3,000 Simmons BeautyRest mattress/box spring for $500 that way. I knew essentially which models of mattress I wanted (it’s an odd mix of both very firm and very soft -back support AND room for T&A  but they had a few different options in that line ), & I just kept checking back until they got one in stock, in my price range, and haggled a bit. My son’s mattress & box spring is essentially the same thing one tier down, $1500 full price, but I got a screaming deal on it for $150 (half off last years model, half off again for mismatched fabrics, and then their annual sale & a web special kinda of thing. I loooove my son’s bed. Almost -but not quite- better than my own. And a helluva lot more than I liked my old mattress. His mattress was actually a fluke. I suspected it wasn’t going to be any good / we’d use it as a trundle bed for sleepovers, but it turned out to be so amazing that it became his bed, and then I started looking for one for me by the same company, in the same style. (Ie I went around to the shops and test drove a lot, found the ones I wanted in the next tier up, and settled in to hunt for one I could afford). I’d have just gotten a second one like his for me, but the price was back to way the f*ck more than I could afford. I just lucked out with his. Mine required some serious shopping.
^^^ Buying a good mattress is a LOT like buying a car. ^^^
If you’re willing to shop around, and wait, and see what prices are during the different sales? You can get the same durn mattress -for a fraction of the price- as walking in and wanting to go home with one. Unless you just get lucky. The sales tomreally hit up are 4th of July, Labor Day, New Years, Tax Day, & Memorial Day.
This is one of the places I start my serious shopping at >
