Where Do I Start?

Basically, I'm at my wits-end and know for a fact I'm in need of some professional help and I am ready to accept it. Back in 2012 I was referred to a Therapist who had diagnosed me with PTSD. I regrettably didn't get far into my sessions before deciding I don't need them and had no support to continue.

Right now I'm very much ready, but have no insurance, and feel that it's in my best interest to maybe try some inpatient therapy if at all possible. I was wondering if anyone had some suggestions of how I can get started.

My vote is always to read Waking the Tiger by Peter Levine. It gives a thorough explanation of PTSD and lots of his and his patients' experience in therapy.

I hope you find someone good. In the meantime, the book can make sense of a lot of discombobulating experiences you might have and have had.

Have you gone onto google and looked for low-income therapists in your area? There should be some, most areas have programs that aid the mentally ill who don't have money (probably because that's most of us lawl).

I would call any therapists you find listed, and ask them if they have experience with PTSD.

If you're in a crises, and you tell the hospital or the police that you feel you're a danger to yourself or others, they legally have to get you some sort of help. Usually, they'll put you on a 72 hour hold.... from there, they might be able to arrange a long-term thing :/

Good luck ^^

After doing some research I found a place I'm interested in. I put in an application for a "call back" so we can discuss my options, I guess.

The above posts are excellent, for you to consider. To pick up on the later, in the U.S., you need to be of danger to yourself, or others, to be admitted to the hospital.

I've always been able to find a therapist who would let me barter, when I've needed it, on a sliding scale.

@change,
Not true. She doesn't need to be a danger to herself or others to qualify for inpatient treatment in all facilities. I was hospitalized in a trauma unit with those who weren't there because they were a danger to themselves or others. However, unfortunately, these types of inpatient programs aren't feasible for many if insurance isn't involved, as I believe that some won't even take self-pay patients.
