News Why It's So Hard To Talk To White People About Racism

This issue became front page news in Aus last football season, and wow did it really bring to the surface the still very much bubbling tensions between the colonists and natives in Aus that most (whites) had long denied.

An indigenous footballer (very much celebrity here) called out a spectator at a game for screaming that he was an 'ape'.
The term ape is applied to our aborigines in a negative tone, implying that they are less evolved than us far superior colonists *rolls eyes.

It was a good call on the footballers behalf, however unfortunately the name caller ended up being a 12 yr old girl, who was consequently evicted from the match by burly security and then subjected to police questioning.

The story organically unfolds from there, the footballer becomes a target of hate by those who feel he was being too sensitive about his origins, an thus picking on an innocent child. eventually does a war dance of his people (at an INDIGENOUS match, most aptly) fueling more rage from the predominantly white crowd, and then ends with the footballer retiring in a hell driven flame after being boo'd by pretty much the entire crowd every single time he touches the ball for the rest of the season.

The country divided into 3 parts over this, those who defended our revered footballer and agreed with his stance, calling everyone who differed of opinion a racist.

Those who denied racism at all and declared that suddenly, after 300 odd matches, that our footballer was just a shit player and deserved all the booing.

And then the third group who were just plain racist thugs and didn't seem to care that racial taunts are illegal here.

As awful as this all was at the time, it began a really important conversation here, that too many had let lie for too long
these conversations NEED to keep happening, an never stop, else we descend into apathy and neglect.

Aboriginal Australians have a shorter life expectancy than almost any group of people in the world.
The resources offered them in health and education are sorely lacking.
They are the forgotten ones in a fast moving modern world and the more light we shine on the shameful past we brought them, the better for them.

I'd like to say that I am not racist, but id be naive to claim that, its been etched into my very being to be 'afraid' of those not like me.
And through fighting against that, I've reached a point where my kids claim I can often be racist toward my own people instead, choosing to only see negative in pretty much everything the colonists have done or achieved here.

Talk about lack of self-identity haha.

Ape is horrible I will be flamed for this but if she got a smack in her smart little mouth perhaps better words would come from it in the future.

I agree it is an important discussion but it is a useless one if the complexities of the problem aren't really talked about. I wish there were more posts similar to yours Mary (1979-the best year ever). but alas a lot of this thread was 'is not; is so; is not, is so' with some intelligent remarks interspersed between that.

Ape is horrible I will be flamed for this but if she got a smack in her smart little mouth perhaps bet...

Aww I understand your sentiment.
But there was a fuzzy feel good end to that part of the story that became a lesson to us all.

Adam Goodes (footballer) agreed to meet with the young lass, accepted her apology personally and was able to educate one naive young Aussie on the.true meaning of a name that I'm sure she was just parroting, she likely had no real idea of the depth of the name, due to.the fact our racist past has been buried much of her short life.

It was very much a positive ending for all.

Such a shame the adult part of this country aren't as graceful as that young girl was.

You mischaracterized me, painting me as a pseudointellectual shit stirring troll. I knew a few with Ma...
So it's a stalemate. Moving on.

Grade A conceived a very good test for anyone to take.

The ending part of reasoning skills is what I've encountered at social groups/schools. Fools who go above and beyond to highlight some small thing and blow it out of proportion and trivialize something that should not be trivialized. And it wasn't just the subject of race. White shaming was really something to watch out for, it was toxic.

I can't believe I'm quoting myself, but here it is:
Many people confuse the meaning of racism with the meaning of bigotry. Bigotry is to be intolerant of, or dislike, any group based on ideas, race, religion, politics, etc. Racism is pretty well defined, above - making a judgement against (whether actively or passively) someone based on race. And in a modern world, the definition is now clarifying itself to specifically be the privileged position of the race in majority and/or power. Prejudice is a bias against - a 'pre-judging' - based on anything. Xenophobia is intense and emotional dislike of people from other countries (though can be extended to immigrant populations and even can be seen within caste systems). In the US, especially in the southern border states, there is a great deal of this to be seen between whites and Mexican hispanics.
  • Xenophobe: "Mexicans are taking over this country, they should all be deported"
  • Prejudiced: "Most of them are illegals and don't even speak English"
  • Racist: "I don't like to hire Mexicans, they take away jobs from real Americans"
  • Bigoted: "I just don't like Mexicans, they make me uncomfortable."

I watched the first part of the video, @LuckyDuck - and what bugs me about it is that it's doing what people think is helpful, which is to reduce the conversation about race to the word racism. It's really important to use all four of the terms, above, in order to actually talk about the complexities.

But the video maker is kind of missing the point of the statement, 'they all look alike'. The problem isn't with 'look alike', in my opinion - the problem is with 'they'. And that's xenophobia, not racism, but it sure as hell doesn't help anything get any better.

last point of the video comes in.
I wondered. Will watch it all the way thru, now.

Edit to add: personally, I disagree with the POV in the video. I think it belittles an experience that many people all over the world have. It's all well and good to say 'don't make everything about race' when you haven't lived a life that was primarily shaped by race and racial assumptions. I don't think everyone has lived that race-free life.

BTW-I ressurected this thread because it was extremely triggering to me at first due to how my life was severely damaged by racism and I simply couldn't deal with it. After a year or so of PE. I found my voice again and felt that I do have things to say.

Mary-nice ending and better than my reactionary solution.

@joeylittle, my bad and wilco!

So back to the Australian bit....

IMHO if you're old enough to say racist crap, you're old enough to be called out on it. Her age is not an issue. (Not commenting on the actions of security here.)

What is the alternative? Wait til she's 18 and then try to correct her bad behavior? (Good luck with that one.)

I remember when I was very little I used the "n" word jokingly in replacement of a similar sounding word. I had no idea that the "n" word was bad. Damn if I didn't get a tongue lashing to beat all tongue lashings. I learned to never say that word again. (Point being, if my parents didn't come down on me so hard, I wouldn't have gotten the message just how bad the use of that word is.)

Stop coddling our kids. If they do something wrong, you better believe they should be called out for it. Sitting kids down and calmly explaining why certain behavior is bad doesn't cut the mustard. (If you think it does, I'm guessing you didn't go to public school as a kid.)
