not crazy antibacterial wash
Yeah, this is never a good idea in general.

Specifically to the role of antibacterial/-microbial resistance in pandemic risk (including that of covid-19), John Hopkins University recently released this advisory.
The tl;dr:
Even in viral diseases, a large proportion of deaths are linked to secondary bacterial co-infections, e.g. pneumonia.
Increased antibacterial resistance = potentially amplified mortality, higher medical costs, longer hospital stays when facilities are already at their limit, etc.

Lipsitch predicts that within the coming year, some 40 to 70 percent of people around the world will be infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. But, he clarifies emphatically, this does not mean that all will have severe illnesses. “It’s likely that many will have mild disease, or may be asymptomatic,” he said. As with influenza, which is often life-threatening to people with chronic health conditions and of older age, most cases pass without medical care. (Overall, about 14 percent of people with influenza have no symptoms.) You’re Likely to Get the Coronavirus

And now this: FDA reports 1st drug shortage due to novel coronavirus outbreak

Financial markets collapsing, global recession on its way, drug shortages... it seems like a bit much in terms of panic. we need a “keep calm and carry on” movement.

Yesterday evening NZ had its first confirmed case.

Apparently the supermarkets are now packed with people.
Which is quite annoying, because I am due to go for my weekly grocery shop, and so do not want to deal with these crazed crowds. Ugh.

We need calm and sensibility, now.
The crazy does not facilitate either.

I've got a couple of elderly female relatives who are exactly in the category of high risk. They are concerned. I'm helping them get some basic, every day, non perishable food and personal items in their homes so they can quite literally lock the bloody gates if and when necessary. But only for stuff they would ordinarily need and will use in the normal course of living.

An infectious diseases expert on our national broadcaster mentioned yesterday that young children do not seem to be hit very hard by the virus. Certainly less so than adults.

He pondered whether it was because their immune systems had not previously encountered a 'corona' type virus prior to exposure to this particular virus and therefore their immune systems did not completely over react to it.

He added that in older people who had been exposed to prior CV infections (not this one in particular) when now exposed to this one had extreme reactions, hence the severity of their illness.

So it may be that our immune systems are yet again, overdoing it.

I’ve heard the same theories that it’s triggering an autoimmune reaction which is why kids are not as affected which is very unlike most viruses.

It’s seems like people are either completely dismissive or in a panic. I wanted to talk to my counselor today about my worry of my meds being hard to get. She kept “challenging” me by asking if that is a realistic concern. Uh. Yeah. My doc who thinks all the panic is stupid actually thinks yes, med shortages are an issue worth concern and to get meds filled in advance. Counselor was very dismissive that I have nothing to be concerned about. One of the meds I’m taking is in the same group of meds they are having supply chain issues about now because of the panic over this virus. Like I don’t need to panic, but it’s also not nothing.. And it seems really hard to find anyone to talk to about that balance.

H1N1 didn’t cause such a scare — and it killed a lot of people. I wonder why this virus is freaking people out so much or people are getting so dismissive?
