News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

It's becoming the strawman argument of 2020 that "they just want us to die." One side says the other side wants to die of hunger/economic collapse, the other of the virus. (I'm not saying anyone here is making that argument but that it is a general phenomenon.) Some even go into conspiracy theories of government wanting to kill us all.

The truth is so much more uncomfortable:
People disagree how to best stay alive in an extremely complex situation because there are few clear answers or goof solutions.

As for the "morons" who will rush out to engage in commercial activity? I may not join them when things open up here, but I won't hate on them. They will pump money into the economy and help others work to feed hungry kids. Those who stay home will help flatten the curve and let medical supplies be used slowly over time are equally essential and valuable. BOTH ways of surviving have a different role to play. Neither strikes me as less bad or more good.

The idiots to go around maskless to large keggers coughing? Or those who never see the sunshine and scream at others they are going to kill us all for going out for a walk? (Both types exist in my city.... again, not saying any of those types are here on this thread.) Ok, THEY are morons. They are also in the minority.

Very little in this pandemic is ALL bad or ALL good. Much of it is dizzying shades of various colors and difficult decisions.

I hope I'm wrong but I see a lot of people getting sick in a second or even third wave. It seems almost inevitable.

If it bubbles along through asymptomatic people and then hits a vulnerable person, then through that person being unwell, we know it's still there. It's only through testing or symptoms that give us any idea that it's around.

One of our Territories had no known infections for several days. Everyone relaxed & declared it beaten, eradicated & they could commence lifting restrictions.

Now, seemingly out of nowhere at all they have a couple of people who have presented with infections. Where did they get it from?
I guess thorough contact tracing might get to the source but meantime, it continues on through the population but not making itself known till it makes someone sick again.

I've noticed in my area there are a lot more cars, people and general activity. Maybe it's because the rumblings about 'opening up' are getting louder and louder and maybe because our infection rate is now consistently low. But low is not good enough if your the one it makes sick.

My region you wouldn’t know we’re still under lockdown. A big chunk of the population is out and about just as usual. They come to the store where I work, complain about having to queue outside, complain again once inside about there being too many people whilst ignoring the distancing rules whenever they come across staff like we don’t count. When we challenge them we are told things like ‘it’s okay the virus doesn’t exist’ or ‘everyone else is doing it’. A guy came in today wearing a mask, not to protect himself but to steal from us. By a long shot it’s not everyone behaving poorly, but it’s too many people. I could see this coming though, as people got tired of sticking to the guidelines. It doesn’t help that we’ve had relatively few cases in our area, so people don’t see the need to take it seriously.

Excuse the negative post. I think it’s getting to me today.

Apple Data Shows Shelter-In-Place Is Ending, Whether Governments Want It To Or Not

This is hopeful. Activity is going up without major nationwide spikes. In some areas, fast food and other visits are pre-covid 19 levels. It suggests the possibility at least parts of the economy will rebound, instead of everyone staying away from everything in fear. Also, for the US, it's very expected that people would get comfy and push the boundaries soon enough.

Ya....thoughts are it will come back in September along with the regular flu...so that should be fun. :(

Local government said everyone had to wear masks....one store stopped requiring them because unhappy ass hats were physically threatening the clerks. Ya. Threats to harm the staff because they somehow think it infringes on their rights. Never been prouder to be American.

Polls in the UK say that only 1/5 people want to hurry and open back up. People here are coping with lockdown pretty well. Of course my local NextDoor is turning into a bunch of Nosy Nellies shaming people who drive to the forest for exercise. Then folks with health issues explain why they do such things. Then people abjectly apologize.

It is so different here...

They are starting to relax lockdown orders in some Asian countries around us now. All a bit worrying as the cases in Singapore have exploded and other countries are starting to rack up import cases where Singapore has sent the foreign workers home from the affected dorms.

I am going to stay inside as much as possible for a couple of weeks to see what happens with these relaxed measures. Have a bad feeling it’s all going to go belly up and another lockdown will have to reintroduced.

Still won’t be able to get to T though :(

So, on both sides of the coin. We needed the Stimulus for those out of work, lost a huge amount of money right away without being able to prepare for it, that have no other ways to pay the bills.

But now we are starting to open up, a farmer that sells produce around the nation and over seas cautioned that if people believe that there will be a 2nd, 3rd, 4th stimulus packags and get more money to stay home, no one will want to go out and work the fields. He is fearful that the food chain will break down due to not having enough workers to work the fields because they are getting paid to stay home. And if they think more money is coming, there would be no incentative to go back to work.

I can see both sides of this. People need the money for lost wages but what is the incentative to go back to work, money wise, if there is indeed more stimulus packages are being pushed? Not sure if there will be more but apparently someons is pushing for it.

Any thoughts on this? I'm open to all thoughts on this.

There's roughly a two week lag time while the disease incubates, so it might be a little early to say there are no spikes. In some parts of the country, the numbers are still going up (like here). Not to the extent that the hospitals are being overwhelmed because they seem to have done a pretty good job increasing the available resources. But, I don't expect it to be a news story. The media generally doesn't pay much attention to this part of the country.

Early on, I read a report that said back in the 1918-19 flu pandemic, after the dust settled they compared the economic recovery in places that really shut things down with the places that didn't. Not only did shutting things down result in fewer deaths, those places also had better recoveries. I don't think this is the article I originally read, but it's similar.
