I work in retail. We don’t give a crap about losing the odd customer. What we do care about is protecting our staff from violent and aggressive individuals who would quite happily take it out on us. Is our company to enforce the rules and risk having its own staff attacked? We can remind people of the rules, but neither I nor anyone I know is willing to get yelled at, puched, or spat on trying to enforce them. You might not think that kind of behaviour is common, but it is.

I think the stores could enforce but too risky as jaccat stated. The large stores could put security at the door. There sure are many who are really protesting this and believe it's unconstitutional. I don't see the difference of when they made the world "no smoking" Back in the 80's you could smoke on a plane and in airport, grocery stores and malls, hospital lobby, just about everywhere. That all changed due to second hand smoke. This is just for second hand cooties that can be deadly. I understand the fear of government control but dont understand those that believe it is a hoax or why ppl just won't do it for as long as we need to-not forever.

Yes! This! You could even smoke in hospital rooms back in the day. Everyone followed right along with the no smoking change and businesses enforce it. If someone was smoking inside walgreens, they'd be ask to put it out or leave. Why can't they enforce this? It doesnt have to be illegal if a business sets it as their policy. They can enforce it. They are choosing not to.

I just find it sad that this mask thing is too dangerous to enforce. Are people really that hard pressed in not wear a mask or asked to wear one and if so, why? Why would you not smoke inside but yet get upset at being asked to wear a mask? Thats so confusing to me!

ETA: I'm saying all of this all while wearing a mask is a trauma trigger for me so super hard to do for me and still don't understand it!

Not at first. At least in America, it was a cultural shift that took...oh, I'd say about five years to really catch on, more in certain kinds of venues. And even today - for all the warnings and fines, people still smoke in non-smoking hotel rooms.

Bottom line is, it depends on the willing co-operation of the individual. The store could hire security to turn people back at the door. The store manager could do the same, but wouldn't have the training or the liability insurance to back themselves up.

There's nothing the employee can safely do.

A sign telling people to wear masks is only a request - no matter how strongly it may be worded. AFAIK it's not the law.

I just meant kick them out of the store since the store is stating its mandatory.

^Whose gonna do the kicking? Have you ever tried to physically make somebody do something? Asking a civilian to force somebody to go somewhere like leave a place takes a lot. And they risk being charged with assault and more.

Staff cannot man-handle customers. Security cannot do it. Whose left?

they shouldn't require masks and put it really big on the door.

^Signs rarely change human behaviour. Look at the road regs? Seen a speed zone sign & never exceeded it?? Ever tried to exceed carry on luggage when flying?

Are people really that hard pressed in not wear a mask or asked to wear one and if so, why?

^Because people "generalizations abound in that word already!!" don't want to be TOLD what to do. People don't want to be over-regulated, surveilled, regulated and many people are not completely convinced that the law applies to them! That the virus will effect them!

Why would you not smoke inside but yet get upset at being asked to wear a mask? Thats so confusing to me!

^See above. It took years and years for smoking to be prohibited. It took even longer for it to become a social no no. People still don't think that the non-smoking areas, regs and laws apply to them. Masks have only be a feature of the social setting for a few months at most.

Australia has seen it's biggest increase in virus cases since the pandemic began. Most of the reported cases happened in one state, Victoria. Contact tracing is still happening. Borders between States are prohibiting more and more people and movement with most banning any people at all from Victoria.

Victoria has furthered it state of emergency provisions & some parts have stage three lock-down in force whilst other states are allowing more and more civilian activities.

Some experts are saying that in Victoria there should be a slow reduction in cases by now but others are saying it will take another week.

It seems the experts are saying that for people in the hot zones, self-isolation hasn't been prominent so politicians and health experts are imploring people to limit their activities, get tested and stay in isolation. I hope they listen because Australia would have to have the most generous of safety nets in terms of funding for workers who cannot or should not work.

The virus replication or r factor is thought to be at about 1.5 or 1.2. Getting it below 1 is the aim.

I never said put hands on a customer.

Here, I saw this video and this is a good example of what I mean. You dont have to watch the entire thing. Its the first one he talks about. Maybe that will clear up confusion. And if Costco can do it, others can do it. And its not the law anywhere in the US as far as I know. He said "its our policy".

Went to Walgreens last night for meds and some basics and it says, on a very large sign on the front door that masks were required but I saw 8 people without a mask on. One at the check out (meaning he went through the entire store and went to the check out without a mask). So they certainly aren't enforcing that at all still. I don't know the laws but can't businesses enforce their own policy and kick people out that don't have masks since masks required is on the front door?
I think they can refuse service. I went to a video games store last week and was stopped by a guy who was stood right at the entrance. Told me unless I had a medical card then I had to wear a mask or I was not allowed in. So I put it on. Not sure if they would have had me physically removed though ?

In the state of North Carolina USA one is required to wear a mask in public at this time and for over a month now, if my memory serves me. This is an executive order frpm our governor. Not everyone obeys this law, but stores try to enforce it with signs saying that masks are required. I am not sure what happens if folks don't cooperate.
