News Worldwide impact of the novel coronavirus (covid-19)

Today we have 31 active cases in a town of 3,400. Not a lot right now, but I'm going to be interested in how many more get sick. My next door neighbor is heading up the non-masker protest in town. Interesting to read what people think. Most people responding to his post don't understand what scientific evidence is, and quote YouTube and show a ripped piece of paper from Johns Hopkins listing variants. Doesn't say what kind of varients or if it is even Covid. It could be for plants. It's as if they think the only thing that uses the variant names is Covid. At least now most people believe that the virus is real, they just don't believe they are susceptible to it. They say the death rate is low, as if getting sick with it is fine as long as you don't die. To each his own. I'm pretty sure I'll probably get it even though I mask and am vaccinated. At least I'll probably get a mild case.

wow. If this is what it's like with the vaccine no wonder people are dead.

So we all have tested positive as breakthrough cases. Dad had it first, was sick for a few days but recovered. The hubby, sis and I all got sick. It feels like a random bad cold for hubby and I, can't stop coughing, sneezing, tired, what not but sis has been really, really sick because she's imunocompromised. Yesterday the doc told her that if hadn't had the vaccine she would have been in the hospital by now.

No sure how I feel about it to be honest. I mean, I get the vaccine isn't supposed to be the cure all and it's purpose is to lessen the impact, not stop the virus but damn. That it blew thru my whole family this fast and this badly is kind of shocking. And we've been following all the rules along the way, which I'm sure is why I'm writing this from my couch and not the ER.

Those anti-vaccers and non-maskers?
Ya. It's gonna just get uglier for them

^This is the aim - if you are going to get it, that it is as least serious as possible.

^ I know right! The people who insist on not getting the vaccine and who are not asymptomatic must get so, so sick. I still hear people from all over steadfastly refusing medicine that may help them stay alive and recover from the infection.

Israel who has a very, very high vaccination rate has commenced giving boosters to their over 60's age group because after about 6 months the vaccines were losing their effectiveness in terms of immunity against Delta variant. But at the same time, it was still quite effective in fending off serious illness, hospitalisation rates and death.

Sydney and New South Wales infection rates are climbing rapidly. There are fears that the virus has jumped into indigenous populations in remote country areas. with several small clusters growing there. The government is responding with sending more vaccine and personnel into those areas. There is a really high uptake rate amongst our indigenous peoples overall so hopefully that will help them.

I am due to receive my second AZ in a week. Personally I just want to get it over and done with. I was a little concerned that my body would respond similar or worse to the first vaccine, which was malaise, fever, headache and generally feeling like I was heading into a horrible flu virus. But I have spoken to my gp and she has advised that the second dose of AZ generally does not have the same kick as the first. Unlike Pf which apparently is really good on the first dose and not so good on the second.

But again, compared to the actual virus and infection the vaccine is small goods and I would still get the second dose regardless.

Can I ask, when (how long ago) was your second shot? (or the shot, if you got J&J)?
I got mine in feb...hubby and sis in March and april....we all got phizer

But at the same time, it was still quite effective in fending off serious illness, hospitalisation rates and death.
Yep.. thats what docs told us....its not gonna keep you from getting sick, it's going to keep you alive if you do get sick. Dads 88 and diabetic, sis is immunocomprimised from cancer, hubby has asthma....and they are all still here. So the vaccine works.

Sadly many many more people will die before that sinks in for them 🥺

A booster every 6 months is a small price to pay to stay safe. IMHO. I get a flu shot every year anyway. I never got a pertussis booster as an adult, since I didn't think it was around much but I caught it at a campground. It was horrible. I coughed til I puked for a year! A shot is so much easier!

I banked on a shot 6 months away. Had the J&J in April so 6 months would be mid Oct. I don't mind at all. Not sure why my dad still thinks he doesn't have to wear a mask now. Especially since he got his 2 vaccines in like Feb or something. Pfizer. It worries me that he refuses to wear a mask. I'm still masked up but half the call center isn't and we got another email yesterday that Covid was in the call center again, two people, in early Aug. It's scary. How well can cloth (mask) really protect me?

ya -scary to think it wears off so quickly. I figure now I'm pretty well covered tho - since I've had both the vaccine and covid! 😁

I am so very, very glad I got the vaccine because even after being vaccinated it has still been a miserable experience. Happily most of the symptoms only lasted a couple days but I have a cough that I can't shake and sis is still not able to get up and about yet. It's totally wiped her out. Dad's better overall but still tired and hubby is just well enough to be bored out of his mind LOL

I can't imagine how awful it would have been for all of us if we hadn't gotten the vaccine to at least buffer the symptoms.

Found this really interesting article about those on the front lines. Some good points in it about people making stupid "personal choices" but then expecting someone to save them when it goes wrong....

compassion fatigue for anti vaccers

This.
“What makes me the maddest,” one of my doctor friends told me, “is that these people will reject science right until the second they need everything I have to keep them alive, and then they feel that they can come to our door and be entitled to that help and that hard work.” This friend is characterizing the inconsistency in the behavior she sees in people declining a vaccine but then demanding medical care based on the same science.
