Zyprexa Reaction And Starting Seroquel

I was on 10 MG of Zyprexa daily for less than a month when my legs swelled up badly. I am now off of it for a week and am still experiencing swelling as well as stiff joints. My pdoc said that the Zyprexa isn't fully out of my system yet. The problem is that my joints are so stiff that the pain wakes me up at night. Has anyone else had a similar reaction to Zyprexa? If I wake up in pain tonight I am going to my family doctor for help tomorrow.

I am to start taking 100 MG of Seroquel tonight and am hoping that I don't have a reaction to it. I need an atypical antipsychotic as I have Bipolar Disorder in addition to my PTSD. I'm almost afraid to take the Seroquel after my reaction to the Zyprexa. But I know that my symptoms need to be brought under control before I spiral further downwards. Is anyone else out there on Seroquel? Does it help with your symptoms?

Yes I had bad reactions to Zyprexa and even worse with Seroquel. I blew up like a balloon, very painful joints, I practically lived at the Chiropractors. I have been taking Geodon for several years. I have only lost ten of the thirty pounds I gained on Zyprexa, but it helps my thinking so I keep taking it. I wish SSRIs would help me and get off an antipsychotic.

ROAMMINGGNOME: I have been taking 50 mgs. of Seroquel for the last few years before bedtime to help me sleep and amplify the effects of my antidepressant. No side effects. My shrink told me the normal dosage of the medication for psychosis is 800 mgs. a day. Sounds like you are still within a safe range, but if it is too heavy (each person is different), tell the doctor right away, as you might need an adjustment. I have no idea what Zyprexa is, but it sounds like you had a terrible reaction. I realize how frightening that could be!

@KwanYingirl and @Glenn R. Thanks for the replies. Yeah the reaction I'm having is a pretty big one. My joints are so stiff at night that they lock and wake me up. It is very painful so I went to my family doctor this morning and got pain medication. It is taking the edge off the pain which is helpful. My pdoc mentioned that this is part of the bad reaction I'm having to Zyprexa but didn't tell me to do anything about the pain. Hopefully it will not last as long as your pain lasted KwanYingirl. I took the Seroquel for the first time last night. Unfortunately, I still woke up with the joint pain. Maybe tonight will be better.

ROAMINGGNOME: So sorry you are suffering. Hopefully, that will improve overnight. Although the Seroquil could and should help with the Bipolar symptoms, it won't impact the joint pain. Since that is exclusively a side effect of Zyprexa, it will have to leave your body completely. The Seroquil should also aid you in sleeping. If you didn't get any side effects last night, you most probably will not. With psychotropic medication, you sometimes have to wait for the good effects, but the adverse ones show up immediately.

I'm beginning to wonder if my pdoc is wrong and that the swelling in my legs is from the skin infection I have. I finished my antibiotics yesterday and woke up today with severe swelling. I will call my family dr. tomorrow. Hopefully, I won't need IV antibiotics.

I realize I am late to this conversation, but my Doc just added Zyprexa 10 mg for emergency use. I am on 200 zoloft, 10 mg of valium a day, 15 mg of Deplin, and 12 mg of prazosin.

Her theory is that when I am triggered or entering an episode I will take Zyprexa and sleep through it. Sounded great at the time, but now I am a little concerned.

Thanks for the information.
