. Why does it matter?
Nozafe/Ava, here.
To me, individually it doesn't matter. if I'm looking for help, or understanding? Then, definitions matter. Because I'm dealing with other people.
Individually, it doesn't matter what is making me sick, if I can take care of it on my own. If I can't? It matters that others have studied different kinds of sickness and know how to treat it. That means taxonomy. Grouping like things together. Discovering microbes. Finding out the differences between bacteria, viruses, fungi, prions, parasites, poisons, genetic diseases. Studying each illness. Separating each out from each other. So that a "wasting fever" isn't treated with chemo & radiation when it's a parasite that can be treated with one pill.
So. Do I have PTSD? Do I have a life long cyclic disorder that is highly manageable, but often lethal? Or do I have something else? Something maybe better dealt with a different way? What can I do about what I do have? What works? What doesn't work? These -and others- are questions we can only answer if we know what we're dealing with. If we have a common frame of reference. Have shared definitions. Or we're just reinventing the wheel every single time.
The better we understand a thing? Whether it's science, or strategy, or something else that starts with S ;) The better able we are to deal with it. As people. As a group. As individuals? It only matters what the group is doing when we're depending on -or a part of- that group.
I care a little too much about other people. I care that they're getting the right treatment. I care that what I do doesn't hurt them unnecessarily. So those same questions I want to know for myself? Isn't just about me. It's about everyone. I believe that everyone deserves the best standard of care, the best knowledge, the best help they can get. And that means knowing what we're dealing with. As much as we're able to. I'm a closet romantic; I believe, very strongly that people deserve the best of everything. In love, or medicine, family, career, life. To me, that's just & fair. But? Fair isn't everyone gets the same thing. Fair is everyone gets what they need, to be their best.
I want people with PTSD to get the help they need. I want people with other problems to get the help they need. I want the people studying all of those things to get what they need to better understand what we're all dealing with, whatever it may be.
I care about other people. I care about myself.
For me, that's why it matters.
