I am not a fan of her music, but I like her as a person.
This may be one of those popular diagnosis things, or not. I don't know her personally, so I can't say.

I am fairly sure she won't make a joke out of it. Which is the best anyone can ever ask.

At worst I'm indifferent to the idea. Not that her mental health is any of my business.

What I wonder is how she does all she does with PTSD.

Music is theraputic. MANY singers have mental illness and use music by a way to work out trauma. It's why we can connect to songs.

But there are MANY very functional people with mental illness. The first one that comes to mind is Robin Williams but many others. He didn't have PTSD, that I know of, but did have depression.

I know she was raped and she's very big into sexual assault advocacy.

Yes she was. At 19. Many broke the story but here is one:

And we have a thread somewhere about how the brain doesn't "bounce back" with adult trauma as it does with childhood trauma. How children are much more resilent then adults. I think this would be a wonderful example.

And it's an example of functionality. There are people with diagnosis PTSD from all "scales" of functionality.

Also, I know each news outlet posts things differently so here is another about "coming out" about PTSD:

I suppose she feels like sharing due to her public reach, and feels she can help which is fair enough I suppose.

This PTSD label is bothering me to be honest, I don't tell anyone, and I'm happier to simply advise that I'm suffering adrenaline related damages. I'm fairly convinced I'll never recover much further than I have, which I'll deal with, but for some reason I feel douche chills even mentioning PTSD now.

The folks I know who have schizophrenia, bi-polar, manic are all still looked down upon by society in my humble opinion...it seems more socially acceptable because it has association to the rather impressive military folks who deservedly earn it, but I simply feel uncomfortable. Who knows, I'm probably wrong.

Robin Williams reminds me SO MUCH of my cousin that took his life. From the outside he functioned just fine I had no idea what was going on but on the inside he was a mess.

This, pretty much.

I tend to go with brain injury, because, well, it's also applicable, and leave it at that most often. I really like your phrasing of it though hence commenting.
