I take Prazosin for the nightmares. 1mg of Abilify for mood, but I'm weaning off of it now and a drug called amantadine. The amantadine helps with the dysregulation that I feel and the sensory bombardment/hyper vigilance. It also helps with the brain fog.

@Lauren Taylor

Meds are a recent addition to my work. I'm hitting five years of intense therapy in a few months, but meds weren't added until this summer. So, a lot of my changes came med free. We added meds when therapy didn't seem to take enough of the edge off some of my sensory dysregulation. I likely have a sensory processing disorder on top of major sensory issues from my ptsd. So, the amantadine has been a life saver! I was able to tolerate emdr better and wrap up my years of work once meds were added.

My daily life is good, I'll always have to work and be mindful of my world and how it effects me, it'll never go away. Certain times of the year, my symptoms will always flair and I'll have to work yet even harder.

Medication has helped me to keep things in a better balance, that mixed with diet restrictions. Keep in mind, meds are like finding a needle in a haystack. Bodies and chemistry are so vastly different. I tried many options over many months, and had many adverse reactions to a number of medications before coming to where I am now.

Should you choose medication, know that it's a process for sure and it'll be very individual to you. But if you do, the medication sub-forum is a great place to ask more specific questions.

Your experience helps smoothens my fear
My Psych was dead against them and the treatment guidelines - said only use if symptoms get in way of other treatments. He said depression grows organically out of PTSD and symptoms would recur and be worse after stopping meds - so I avoided them . I was 110 kg and depressed and emotionally eating and sitting all day - I did not trust my psych to do hypnosis but when pressured by insurance to take meds I bought a hypnosis MP4 playe r and got hypnosis to exercise drink more water and move and stop emotional eating. Apparently PTSD sufferers are really susceptible to hypnosis so I started walking gardening and swimming - all within a week and lost 20 kg in nine months and am in a way better place for it. I to was not sociallising afraid to interact with people including at the swimming pool etc and even family and that has all gradually improved . I still have my moments but it is no longer every moment - all without meds - Give hypnosis a go for exercise as an alternative to meds. I notice if I miss some days my mood is worse so it is really a new habit that you have to form and the sideaffects are good not bad. I also joined a free exercise physiology one one one session that was aimed at sufferes of PTSD - the trainers were really supportive.
