*NOTE: I am posting this just to report a shooting. I am not wanting to debate politics in any way*

Dead Link Removed

They say "it appears two Capitol Hill police agents were shot" but that doesn't seem to be confirmed. Shooter is in custody thank goodness. It is just breaking so not a lot of info yet.

ETA: They just reported that someone walked up and asked if Republicans or Democrats were playing. Reps were but no one knows, yet, if it's connected to this shooting.

A development, another Congressman Rep Roger Williams was also shot. I know Scalise was hit in the hip but unsure where Williams was shot.

Correction: It was Congressman Williams's aid that was shot. Not Williams himself.

I hate breaking news as things are so fragmented, facts wrong, and advised things unconfirmed.

@lostforgottensoul the thing that bugs the crap out of me is that everyone (news and government) is making this out to be political. When we have people that are disgruntled after being fired from a work place, we don't BLAME the employer. The blame lies with the shooter.

This guy was apparently very disturbed. Only mentally ill people go on a shooting rampage.

Yep! Knew that was going to happen. Why oh why does everything need to be a polical fight? It's not democrats' fault, or Republicans' but the shooter's!

My dad does that. "Liberals" want this or that or do this or that (all liberals he says) and I am always saying "not all liberals want or think the same!"

Ugh! :banghead:

ticklish subject this. I always find myself squirmy slightly in my chair when someone said ONLY mentally ill people do...
True or not the term gets tossed around too loosely and it's used too quickly to categorize too many who don't fit in the same universe as the gunman.

Mental health gets interesting sometimes and people are quick to make generalizations and lump all 'mentally ill' into one category.

This guy had a history of domestic abuse but still managed to pass a background check and purchase a gun.
What I get concerned about is that PTSD is a 'mental illness' and that this might get used as fodder for gun control that will allow psychiatric history to be taken into consideration before purchasing a gun.

Personally, I'm not a danger to anyone else. The worst I would do to anyone is thrown mean looks and maybe a pillow if I'm really mad.

I am looking into purchasing a gun AND learning how to use it properly and responsibly because:
1. I've heard great things about shooting guns at a range.
2. Honestly, I live alone, 20 minutes from the nearest police. I would like some way to defend myself.

The case could be made that no one with PTSD should ever be allowed to own a gun because it's they are 'mentally ill'.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure there's not one among us on this site who would even THINK about doing something like what happened to Scalise.

That's my two cents worth.

The quick and dirty of those who CAN NOT own a gun in the US.
Fugitives
Illegal aliens
Unlawful users of CERTAIN drugs
Those COMMITTED to a mental INSTITUTION (federally declared mentally defective, or comitted to a mental facility --by the courts, not by a doctor).
Those convicted of crimes punishable by imprisonment for more than one year (which generally covers felonies)
Those convicted of crimes of domestic violence

Your therapist and P-doc are bound by HIPPA and your medical info is private.
The shooter had a domestic violence charge on his record that someone missed. He should have never been allowed to purchase a gun. Totally different from going to see a therapist of your own free will.
ETA, I did read that if you have spent 30 consecutive days in a mental institution you might find you have a bit of a time getting one without a note from a doc saying it's safe for you do to so. It seems to vary a bit from state to state.

So, for instance, I have had ONE hospitalization in my life- that was 15 years ago or so. I see a therapist of my own free will. I have no criminal record.
I can buy a gun.

@desiderata310 I stand by my statement that "only mentally ill people go on shooting rampages". Do I think that anyone on this site would do This?!?!?!? I can't say, but I will say that someone with a mental disorder, given the right circumstance, the right amount of anger and no emotional regulation, then yes, I think they could snap and pick up a gun and do what this guy did.

Every state has their own gun laws for people with mental disorders. http://www.ncsl.org/research/civil-...session-of-a-firearm-by-the-mentally-ill.aspx

I stand by my statement that "only mentally ill people go on shooting rampages".

I don't disagree. That said, I don't wholly AGREE either.
There's a certain section of mentally ill individuals who would do that. THAT was my point. It's unfair to say that my buddy at work who has very mild depression (also mentally ill) and takes a mild anti-depressant would pick up a gun and go on a rampage.
Anyone and everyone is capable.
Not everyone is likely to do so.
I would just like there to be some way to differentiate between people who are so far gone that they could do something like this from the run-on-the-mill garden variety mentally ill folks that frequent this site.
And it's ok to agree to disagree. ;)
