Much like many of you I hate the holidays with a passion, but like most everyone, I do like getting stuff...

So, this year I got a brand new pair of OTB brand Thor TC tactical boots. Personally, I think they are shitty tac-boots, but they are bad ass hiking/hunting/looking like a man that knows hardcore footwear without appearing to be a skinhead. High quality comfortable, versatile footwear makes me happy.

I also got two four by eight sheets of .020/2mm styrene plastic. I am slowly cutting this up and gluing it into a studio scale model of the Caterpillar P-5000 PWL exoloader from "Aliens". Obsessively detailed models have proven to be an excellent escape from the beast.

What ya'll get that made the holiday tolerable?

I like the "ROCKY" brand load-carrying boots. They are USA standard issue (the cushioning is via a sponge mid-sole) with a Vibram lug outer sole.

A new easel, paints, brushes and books. Oh and I created a "manspace" in the basement for hubby so he has a place to play video games and I don't feel so guilty going to my art room to paint.

Karrimor KSBs. They fit as soon as I put them on, no breaking in required.
I'm doing a 1/35 Centurion Mk3, in the colours of Zip's mob circa '65. Agree about the benefits of obsessive detailing (no shit, Sherlock).

I got lots of socks....a shirt....and a book. Recovering from the homeless period, the socks were greatly appreciated.

Need to get back into modeling. Been looking at the paper models people are doing. Some of the space ships are pretty impressive.

I mean really, does that all important bolt have to be so far back that you can't see it or can only just barely touch it? Or what about the "special tool" required to remove that one part now residing in the Queens Special Museum, as it is the only one left on earth?

I quit cutting myself and bought an English sports car, more self abusive.

Ah, no, no Whitworth tools, I like bleeding knuckles too much. Ah, yes, owned a Triumph TR-4. Went to night school to learn engineering from Sirs Healey and Austin. Sir Lucas has a degree in Austin and Healey but also studied under the Marquis de Sade.

As far as UNC and BA, if SAE or Metric doesn't fit, it's time to drill and tap : ).

No, guys (and ladies), it's the perfect hobby for me. I lose the beast except for throwing things and of course what I throw is either very expensive to replace or not of this world but planted here by alien beings out to drive me completely over the edge.

To be fair, the Healey is the "Swiss watch" of English cars. When they are running right, they are a delight to drive.

I got this one at a screaming price but as does come with screaming prices, too many AMERICAN mechanics with no clue as to dos and don'ts have had at her. I've run out of counting what they did wrong to her.

When I slogged through my homeless period a few years back, clean socks were nearly as important as food to me. Even when you are feeling low, fresh socks make everything a bit more tolerable. Good to hear things are looking up for you manno. I look back on my homeless days as one of the high points during one of the lowest points of my life. Learned a metric shit tonne about myself, and to appreciate the simple stuff.


As for the paper modelling, DO IT. Most are free, and I agree many of the ships are amazing. I have the patterns for some really serious ones- everything from a 1.5 meter studio scale USS Sulaco, to a life size T-800 endoskeleton from Terminator.
