The confusion, alienation, and fear of the veterans ( my father) was highlighted before the articulation of the beginning of the long arduous history. I am not, as you all know by now, proud of this country. :(

Ten minutes in, only the introduction, and I feel sick.

I say, don't force yourself to watch, @ShikibuZ. It'll be around forever. Maybe at some later date, you'll feel better able to handle it.

ETA: Yes, @ShikibuZ, I can imagine. Ken Burns was on MSNBC the other day and I could tell it would be intense just from how he talked about it. I have a friend here who served in Vietnam and has PTSD and some screwed-up political ideas to show for it. I'm amazed he functions as well as he does. Way better than I do.

I think that speech was incredibly scripted and cleverly (and dangerously) weaved some pretty strong nationalism and populism in with a few semi-reasonable things that make it easier to justify nationalism and populism to people who might be on the fence about such idealogies.

Nikki Haley said "it's a new day at the UN" and indeed it is, in a terrible way.

Nationalism is on the rise world wide, and America is no exception.

Just one more flip flop for Trump. During his campaign he f*cking hated the UN and everything about it. Also made me sick because he talked about Cuba and Venezuela being communist countries, and the way that they treat their people. Did he mention the countries that rule with Sharia Law and the atrocities that those countries do to their people??? NO! Makes me sick.....

I sincerely hope you are kidding. I have an extensive professional and personal international network. This man has, in a record amount of time, not only made this country an international absurdity, he has systematically dismantled many (most, in my opinion) "reasonable" modes of engagement. To say that "nationalism is on the rise here as in other places" is a frightening excuse for abominable behavior/reasoning!

No. I'm not kidding.

I believe it was very much scripted. It's right in line with the bannonist ideologues in the White House and the ideology of the types of speech writers Trump uses for big speeches like this - like Stephen Miller.

Reading a transcript of the speech vs a transcript of Trump speaking at rallies shows even more how much it was scripted. His language is Trumpian, but he spoke more full sentences, less random one word repetitions, etc.

By saying it was scripted and thought out, I am
not complimenting the speech by any means. Not one bit. I mean yes it's good to have things thought out, but I believe the speech was terrible nationalistic populism wrapped up with a few semi- reasonable ideas here and there.

Nikki Haley and others were dropping hints about all these ideas the speech would include. Reporters given a heads up in advance as well. This was the speech they expected. I have not read one knowledgeable commentator or analysis who believes it was off the cuff. (I'm not that smart myself so I read folks from the left and right and center.)

I have read some commentators who are. It favorable to Trump but think it was remarkable for how conventional it was! That's a very surprising assement to me: Dead Link Removed

Just because something shocks you or me doesn't mean it's was unplanned.
