Hallowean

Not Active
I've been a bit of a busy beaver on here already, since yesterday but I haven't introduced myself...not that it's a huuuge deal, I'm just an average mortal, no fancy stories to share or crazy exciting adventures like base jumping off the statue of liberty or climbing Mt Everest. My really only greatest accomplishment is raising my son who is now in college and working. So enough boring info, I discovered this page whilst reading thru the endless articles about dealing with neighbors from hell barking dogs (evidently a very common worldwide problem). One thing that has greatly helped me in my life obstacles is being able to get things off my chest and seek answers/guidance, so I appreciate that this site exists and glad to have discovered it. Have a blessed day/night ~ and ps: don't be the kind of neighbor who allows your animals to torment your neighbors, I beg you!

So are the dogs triggering your PTSD? I live in a rural area and some of my neighbors think that they can let their dogs, cats, chickens and ducks out to wander wherever. Most of the neighbors are good about their animals and if anyone sees horses or cows out, they catch them and post to facebook. I don't think their dogs are allowed on your property by law. If they come and you can film them, do so and call animal control every single time they do. It's a lot of work, but they will have to do something.

nice to formally meet you, hallowean. i spotted your dog complaint posts and decided not to go there. i am a devoted animal lover and get quite preachy on the subject. the biggest single problem i have with continual barking is that it is a sign of neglect. those critters are crying for help and nobody is listening. dogs don't carry on like that. it is irritating, too boot and my great amazement is that their owners **choose** to live like that.

anyhoo. . . putting my soapbox back in the closet now. . .

welcome to the forum.

Thank you. I don't know if I have ptsd..haven't been diagnosed...but it's highly likely as I've endured trauma such as physcal abuse and other physical injuries. I def have anxiety. The dogs are just sooooo dang loud it's crazy! And it's all day everyday and every night. I do have the roaming dogs on trail cam roaming early morning hours around 1-3 am in my backyard pissing on my plants (killed some of my lillies and other neighbors newly planted shrubs) and property, also pooping. Piles of poop are common in my yard now...big poop. I could have ptsd triggered by dog barking in the future if this goes on much longer...one man I talked to on YouTube developed it from his neighbor`s dog barking....it gets triggered even if he hears one barking thru a telephone in the other person's background.

Yeah, good old Youtube as a source of reliable medical or mental health? Not so much!! Triggered by dogs barking, for sure that could happen. Developed because of dogs barking, not so much!!!

Have you seen someone about getting help for your mental health? Treating underlying mental health issues could be a good way to make those barking dogs bearble.

Thank you and likewise. You are right! Im glad you pointed that out because they are left in that fence 365 days 24/7. Not even sure if they clean up the poop because it wofts over now and then. It doesn't appear they get much attention especially during the day but I don't look over there very often or try not to...and I can't see beyond the wood fence as it's too tall. All I know is the dogs stay back there at all times...it really is sad and they don't need that many or any dogs but taking a wild guess they likely breed them for sale.

I love all kinds of critters as well, even saved a 2 foot chicken snake from a glue trap in garage last year! Released him in the field. Rescued a mouse as well from glue trap as I didn't have the heart to kill it...although I'm not opposed to mouse traps. BTW, vegetable oil deactivates the glue incase the tip can come in use to someone. I have to use them for brown recluses unfortunately.

Haha yeah I just took his word for it but I also heard the recording of the dog barking.
so I could definitely see the possibility...and since I'm living it myself...compare it to someone honking their horn close to your home day in and day out. Read about the effects of dog barking on your health...here is a link if interested in learning about it. Why the noise of barking dogs is so upsetting and harmful to the neighbors

Yeah I've tried antidepressants in the past, they basically just make me not care about much of anything,, like being numb. Was on Xanax for a while for anxiety due to vertigo. I don't take any medicine at all at the moment and try not to. What would really help is to regain my peaceful yard and home...not to sound like a smart elic.

Yeah, perhaps take a step back from what you're writing and where you are. You're on a PTSD peer support forum.

Honking horns and barking dogs can be incredibly stressful. But it gets offensive very quickly if you're comparing that to the kind of experiences of most of the members here have endured. "Stressful enough to cause a mental health condition" is a very different issue.

thanks for the hot tip. i wish i had thunk of that when i was trying to rescue a toddler from one of those blasted things.
Hahaha! My dog (chihuahua) got his foot stuck on one in my parents basement last year...scared him to pieces...must've thought he was being attacked. That time I used nonstick vegetable cooking spray which worked as well.

I've had plenty of experiences if you'd like me to make a list. Is my ex husband slamming my face into a door facing busting my left eye open enuf to qualify to be here? It just so happens that my current problem is the non stop barking dogs and the complete lack of consideration from my neighbors. I have not been diagnosed with ptsd but only anxiety. The only people I've talked to about my ex husband was al anon and a crappy counselor but that was many years ago. Ptsd has never been mentioned but it doesn't mean I don't have some amount of it.. I do not run to the doctor every time I feel negative emotions because I don't want to rely on medicine that's full of possible side effects.

It's possible you may see my current problem as tiny compared to yours and that's fine but it does not mean my problem doesn't matter. I hope you never have anyone to torment you on a daily basis.

Right, but the barking dogs is the trigger. I do get it. Home life that doesn't feel safe? Can absolutely trigger ptsd, caused by prior traumatic events.

We do get folks come to the forum thinking that ptsd can be caused by all manner of stressful situations (the classic example being "I got ptsd from my goldfish dying"). There are plenty of people who have read a pop-psychology article and have concluded that, based on a huge misunderstanding of both ptsd and mental illness.

You don't need to list the traumatic events that may have caused your ptsd. I didn't say you don't have ptsd. But I'm definitely not a fan of pop-psychology. It tends to do the ptsd community, and the mental health community, an injustice.

The mantra for the forum here is "Take what's helpful, leave the rest".

I don't feel unsafe, I feel tortured. I am definitely not making a mountain out of a mole hill and not self diagnosing. I'm sure there have been many insignificant/unworthy posts here.

Here is a snipet from the link I posted earlier. Take from it what you will.

When the federal government wanted to push the Branch Davidians to the breaking point in the siege at Waco, they bombarded them with sound, including the sounds of animals in distress. When the U.S. military wanted to drive Manuel Noriega from his sanctuary in Panama, they used the same strategy, because they knew that chronic noise is an intolerable irritant that drives people frantic.
