A Quick Rant About Noise!

As part of my psyche and the PTSD...noise, and especially repetitive noise...irritates the living daylights out of me!

Yapping dogs, someone clipping their nails, bouncing balls, squeaky wheels, keys, or coins being jingled! Can't help it, but it makes me think bad thoughts. I would never carry them out, but they are HARSH! Oh, and PEN-clickers!! Everyone who knows me is aware, and knows better. LOL. REALLY!!

I love and adore children, but when I hear them whining, screaming, or yelling, I want to strangle them and/or their parents.

I think I read somewhere on here that it can be one of the many symptoms of PTSD.

Okay...rant over!:p

I completely understand. This morning my roommate came home and started slamming doors, then the neighbors dog has been barking, then some 20 year old kids were making strange noises and all I wanted to do was yell...STOP.ALL.THIS.NOISE. I could go postal over all this noise. :p

I think that could even drive someone without PTSD totally nuts. What drove me insane was when I was trying to catch up on sleep or even just get a good night sleep and someone down the hall stayed up until some ungodly hour of the morning chattering about nothing or playing some frightfully repetitive music. The worst was when a group of people decided to sit right outside my door and have a conversation at 7:00 am on a Saturday !

Thank heavens I live in the apartments now.

Multiple voices talking over each other, slamming doors, dogs barking in a frenzy, loud yelling (though oddly not my own) all push me into overdrive. I've gotten better than I was, but it's still bad.

I have realized I'm horribly 'aware' of noises, 'words' too, or music- recall as a kid being terrified of thunder and also 'straining' to hear (get the 'scoop'), but also not to make any noise (when having to hide).

So funny (not as in 'haha')- have same all-day-reaction and thoughts about (with) slamming doors, over-hearing arguments, fighting, sometimes shouting (when I don't know why someone is), also thunder (still), repetitve 'clicking', etc. 'Confrontations', bullying, threats, anger, angry-insistences, extreme drunkenness, even loud (but 'happy') parties, etc. Also sometimes drums, etc- anything 'loud', really. Especially out of the blue.

Have you heard of misophonia or hyperacusis? I tried to put in a link but apparently don't have permission to do that yet.

I am 100% sure I have misophonia. Repetitive noises get me every time, but especially mouth noises - gum popping, loud chewing, etc. It is hell and does not help with the other symptoms.

Good luck - there are some good resources for dealing with these issues, though no real "solutions" that I have seen.

When I'm in the midst of unavoidable stress, like the immediate aftermath of having moved, I am way sensitive to noises too. Being in high (higher than average) pain, this can also make me way less tolerant to...crying children, barking dogs and vacuum cleaners. And often the "muzak" in stores...some of it wigs me out of my skin...lol . Stress makes this stuff way way worse than normal.

Have you heard of misophonia or hyperacusis?

Thanks. I had heard of hyperacusis, but not misophonia. These definitely describe me for sure.

Since my neck surgeries last year, it is worse. I have a physical reaction to noise, especially if it is a surprise noise. My automatic verbal response to loud music is the word "sh!t"! Um, not so good in church...but it's a reflex and thankfully doesn't happen often. Only if the person running the sound system makes an error...

My mother's voice is also 'noise' to me. She is quiet most of the time, and I hope that continues. (I live with my parents) She is a super-narcissist never wanted to talk to us before...so don't wanna hear it now! (got a little anger THERE)
