Can Ignoring Your Issues Lead To Severe Physical Pain?

Hi all,
I have been doing some intense EMDR work with 'inner children'. Well, I think I may have needed a break or something because I wound up going on vacation and having a lot of fun and just coasting and taking life easy for the last month, focusing on lighter topics in therapy, etc.

I have had a pain condition called interstitial cystitis for 3 yrs but through naturopathy I've almost healed it. It had been about a year and a half since I'd felt any major pain. I kinda forgot I had it. Last week I came down with possibly the worst physical pain I have been in. The kind where you say 'That was totally uncalled for!' I thought it must be a urinary infection so I started taking d-mannose and vitamin C, but did not take antibiotics. The urinalysis showed a negative culture. I know there can be false negatives, but I also wondered about the power of the unconscious here.

Have any of you been working on your 'stuff' and just needed a break and some debilitating physical issue (pain or otherwise) happened to you... perhaps as a "wake up call" to get back to working on your stuff? Just curious...

Sounds like you had some great fun on vacation! Getting out of a routine can stress the body, as can diet differences while out of your regular habits.
So sorry you suffer from IC. I may have it! Also have IBS. The pain is horrendous! And yes, trying to ignore your problems, or living in denial, can lead to physical pain. The body and mind are connected and the stress will get out, one way or the other! What we do to ourselves' in our heads is what does the most damage.

I can tell within a few days if I have not been doing my emotional care plan. I have to have at least a little stability, or routine. I think everyone does. When my thought patterns become negative, it sends me back to making sure I'm not 'stuffing' some feelings. It took me a few times before I realized if I paid attention, I could take care of my feelings before they snowballed into something else.

Thank you Angelkeeper. Sorry about the ibs... hope you don't have ic! I healed much of it by nutritionally detoxing and taking herbs, but of course the trauma is at the core.

So it sounds like this is true for you as well... I think for me the problem was numbing, just escapism due to the intensity of what had been coming up in therapy. Then when I tried to come back and reconnect after the numbing out, I felt very blocked, like I couldn't get access to those inner emotions. Because of this debilitating pain episode I'm starting to be able to feel them again. I know that while much of me wants to do the work, there are also parts of me that resent having to do this work and just want to run away because it feels too dense.

I can't imagine the pain!! My urologist originally thought i had ic but recanted when he saw the golf ball sitting in my kidney. So i feel for you!!!! I was diagnosed with IBS after some serious stomach issues in high school but only notice symptoms when I'm seriously stressed out...My urologist told me that even people without IC can have bladder issues like that when they're stressed. During finals week in college i peed blood with no infections and no stones...and the best relief for the pain was simply to breathe and relax

Wow Rob Dog. The college thing sounds very scary!! Glad you got through it; very interesting what your urologist said. I'll be interested to hear what my T has to say; I"m sure she'll agree. I know there are things I need to do emotionally so I'ma do 'em. (I hope the kidney thing resolved!)

My vitamin D deficiency causes all-over deep bone, muscle pain when I forget my supplements.

A blood test finds it. All too common in us PTSD-ers, I'm afraid.

Hope your're feeling better...

Sorry to hear about your pain.
A couple of months ago I was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia by a Rhumatologist - guess what ? Its usually related to illness and TRAUMA. Not a nice thing to have along side my CPTSD and its related injuries.

I was wondering how many other people have PTSD and Fibromyalgia, IBS etc...?

I'm waiting on my Vit D test done last week. Both my parents are deficient, and I'm in pain most of the time, so maybe there is a connection. I've gotten used to always hurting, but do get small breaks throughout the day...some days.

Need to get in to see my T.

Hypocalcemia (which is what I have) is also a vitamin D deficiency and here are the symptoms of this disease.

These symptoms include muscle cramps and twitching, [DLMURL="https://www.ptsdforum.org/topic/arrhythmias/"]arrhythmias[/DLMURL] (irregular heartbeat), overactive reflexes, and burning or tingling sensations in the hands and feet.
