I think we, Americans, (or at least the American media), are a little too obsessed with using violent or "fighting" words to describe everyday situations/issues. Think about how many times you've heard one of the following:
the FIGHT against obesity
the WAR against heart disease
the BATTLE between the sexes
Well, last night I heard a new one...and I SWEAR, the news reporter was not meaning to be sarcastic or facetious. They were talking about the record snowfalls we've had in the Northeast this year, and described snow removal efforts as, and I quote, "the WAR on snow."
Umm...let me put on my kevlar vest and get ready for those darn flakes! LOL
