Obama The New President - About Time Commonsense Hits the US

We need change here, and I hope that finally change is now here. I am proud that America did not see Obama as a black man, but as a man that can stand up for his vision.

Hopefully America can finally heal from the bonds of racism and look beyond the color of someones skin... I can only hope that things will change for the good from here on out.

Just my opinion... but I found the election breakdown to be racist. America was broadcasting demographics by white catholic, black, etc... honestly, why the hell would any country break down by race who votes for who? Isn't that racist to a point? I have never seen a country do such a thing for elections....

Just a shame Palin wont be around. She got full marks for entertainment

Seriously though, I've had my fill of all the campaigning and I'm not even in America! What a shocking amount of money to spend on an election in a country where many live in poverty and which is heading for/or in a recession.

Anthony,

While I do agree with you on that point.....I am hopeful that maybe now we can finally put the race issue to rest and come together as a nation....

I am sooooooooooo glad this election is over. IMHO it is actually embarrassing to be in a country that allows someone to "BUY" their victory.

The commercials were overwhelming and ridiculous this time! I agree entirely with Claire. There should be a limit set on how much the candidates can spend. PERIOD.

Speaking for myself, I am "so over" the racist aspect of this and it is still going on this morning as the news shows dissect every word said last night. They are even trying to find "other" reasons why "Obama" won. Young people are why he won and they didn't know what they were doing.

They(news people) are now talking about and speculating just how long it will take for him to fall on his ass and screw up. They say he is not going to keep his promises and all these "followers" will be proved wrong.

This event is simply amazing. All I can do is just shake my head and consider buying my own island and telling the world to F--- Off!

But then this is Just My Humble Opinion

It was a media circus. I don't think Obama can stop the global recession, but he's better than the 'I can see Russia from my house' camp. The whole world was watching! One thing is for certain, people want change. Obama, though, after the Wallstreet meltdown, may have decided to help tow the line.

My girlfriend and I watched the BBC's coverage of the American election and had a lengthly discussion on the process and its outcome. Whilst I am hopeful Obama will be a good president, like others here I don't trust politicians in general. I will believe it when I see positive changes. Claire you make an excellent point, it is shocking how much money is spent on the American election considering its nation's poor, deteriorating educational system, lack of free medical care, recession and so forth. To me, that is not the freedom Americans speak of so fondly. Bottom line, I am grateful to be Aussie and living abroad with my hot Canadian girlfriend! :)

I know I haven't been around in a while.. but I just wanted to chime in and say that I couldn't be happier. Finally - we, as Americans, are no longer imprisoned under the extreme conservative ideology of fear that consumed this nation for eight years. Finally, I have hope that Obama will shrink the huge divide between the rich and the poor - because there is NO MORE middle class in this country. I have, literally, cried random tears of joy since last night.

"yes, we DID"

And as an aside- my german shepherd is smarter than Sarah Palin.

Herc, I really hope you don't truly believe that all young people don't know anything. Let's not forget the 60's when those kiddie hippies knew exactly what was wrong with this country - that horrible war in Vietnam.

HOORAY FOR OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!

-Rach!

Warning: strong language, strong opinions

After the 8 year debacle we've endured, I agree that it's time for a decent human being (not a religiously rabid, anti-gay, anti-abortion, rich, white-wing, paranoid, us-vs-them) to be in office.

I'm sad to read a post about young people being the voters and not knowing what they're doing. Before this last 8 year nightmare, sure Americans were Repub. or Dem., but it wasn't this vicious, divisive, polarization.

8 years ago, we had a surplus, a great economy - an economic America we have been lucky to enjoy for many years.

In 8 years, we've gone trillions of dollars into debt (yes, your great, great, great grandchildren will be paying for this "war on terror"), gone back 40 years in environment protections (how many tons of cyanide will Bush allow in the air...he has children for chrissakes). Bush (and/or his handlers..the man's IQ is under 100, I'm sure of it....or maybe it was all the whiskey and cocaine of his youth) has made this country, made up of mostly moderate and sane human beings so ****ing divisive, as he and his cronies ratcheted more and more toward the extreme (does anyone else remember the, "If you're not for me, you're a terrorist" bullshit?).

Whew.

Glad I got that off my chest.

Yes, Linasmom....my sentiments exactly.
As far as Sarah Palin goes, seems like a nice lady.....but, come on, really, to run the country?

I'm looking for some very good things to happen with the new administration (new govt?), however, I think we should all not be too surprised and upset if Obama gets assasinated. I think we have to be prepared for this.

Just think about the discussions him and Michelle have had regarding this? Brave people, talk about sacrificing for the country.

I took other disabled people to the polls yesterday and now I am hurting in pain so bad that I am on muscle relaxers and in bed most of the day. I am so thankful that I did not hear of any voters being disenfranchized or voting machines showing all republican votes or any illegal (typically Bush) activity or voter corruption going on. I was so worried that McCain would borrow from Karl Rove and Rumsfeld and Bush to steal the election, yet again. Bush is a war criminal and he sat in the oval office illegally for 8 years. Now we Americans have to pay for a war he lied to get the USA into and Bush has the blood of thousands of troops on his hands just so he and Cheney can make some money through Haliburton and other such companies.

Tax raises? How else is this country going to pay for Bush's illegal war (The USA has never before invaded a sovereign country) and the questionable honesty of the financial bailout that paid the CEO's of several big companies, banks and even foreign banks? Can any of you locate for me the true details of where that $7 billion went to? Bush decided to approve and promote the bailout because it was full of corruption; the voters did not get a say on where our tax dollars went.

Of course, Bush is not smart enough to make these decisions himself; he can't even conjugate a verb correctly. His handlers ran the country.

I love Obama, but I would not want the job he is inheriting.
