Perhaps I missed it somewhere in the conversation, but does photographic images not count? Like in the case of an FBI agents who has to go through the images stored in the computers of pedophiles? If this was addressed already, I am sorry. I only skimmed the thread for further discussion. Recordings to me says video and excludes photographs.

Nonfictional v's Actual: I think either word would achieve the same outcome. I'm leaning towards 'actual' because it reflects the 'realness' that the same word is achieving in A1. But that's just mee thinking it reads smoother,
I was coming in here to make a case for non-fictional, because to me it's much more specific; however, after typing it out and looking at them both, I only see non-fictional media as slightly better, and could be argued down.

Interestingly enough, nonvoluntary is properly spelled without a hyphen, but in a euthanasia context (which is where I remembered the word from), it's non-voluntary. One only notices it against non-fictional.

Direct and frequent exposure, over a prolonged period, to non-fictional media involving actual death, catastrophic injury or sexual violence against people, where that exposure is nonvoluntary or for work purposes.

Direct and frequent exposure, over a prolonged period, to recordings of actual death, catastrophic injury or sexual violence against people, where that exposure is nonvoluntary or for work purposes.

Like it.

So, are we then locked in for criterion A with:

A. An event in which one of the following were present:
(1) Direct exposure (via experiencing or witnessing) to actual and/or immediate threat of: death, catastrophic injury, or sexual violence.
(2) Direct and frequent exposure, over a prolonged period, to recordings of actual death, catastrophic injury or sexual violence against people, where that exposure is nonvoluntary or for work purposes.

??????????

(1) Direct exposure (via experiencing or witnessing) to actual and/or immediate threat of: death, catastrophic injury, or sexual violence.

I would remove parenthesis and "to" after. Then the direct is not just to self, but cleanly including Others.

1) Direct exposure via experiencing or witnessing actual and/or immediate threat of: death, catastrophic injury, or sexual violence.

Does not address exposure post immediate event.

DSM III-R

DIAGNOSTIC CRITERIA FOR 309.89 POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER.

A. The person has experienced an event that is outside the range of usual human experience and that would be markedly distressing to almost anyone, e. g., serious threat to one's life or physical integrity; serious threat or harm to one's children, spouse, or other close relatives and friends; sudden destruction of one's home or community; or seeing another person who has been or is being, seriously injured or killed as the result of an accident or physical violence.

(2) Direct and frequent exposure, over a prolonged period, to live recordings of death, catastrophic injury or sexual violence against people, where that exposure is involuntary or for work purposes.

Per those defintions, im likling this one more now.

2 is tight.

1 feels a bit clumsy to me. Not sure if it's the present tense in experience/witness when referring to a past event or series, the parentheses, or ?

- Direct exposure (experienced or witnessed) to actual or immediate threat of: death, catastrophic injury, or sexual violence.

- Direct exposure, experienced or witnessed, to actual or immediate threat of: death, catastrophic injury, or sexual violence.

- Direct exposure to actual or immediate threat of: death, catastrophic injury, or sexual violence. Experienced or witnessed.

- Experienced or witnessed direct exposure to actual, or immediate threat of; death, catastrophic injury, or sexual violence.

Why would animals be open to be a cause of PTSD period? You would be putting animal acts against rape, torture, war, child abuse, so forth. There are other diagnoses other than PTSD... why should animals suddenly part of PTSD?

Now that you put it that way, i totally agree with that and as i think on it (just speaking of video & pictures) the human murders had a MUCH greater impact trauma wise than the animals did.

Not speaking of doing, just watching. So i can see how just watching the killing of animals wouldnt traumtize someone to the point of PTSD.

I love how we are bouncing this stuff around. Its making me look at my own past and learn what sort of impact each thing had and may not have had.

Thanks for this!
