    Reservations about medication

There's been a lot of research that just hitting the gym 3-4 times a week has the same boost as an SSRI. I get the sense from your post that you're not ready for meds. There are other ways to take care of yourself. Eat well. Exercise. Yoga. Just food for thought.

Never feel safe enough to sleep

Listen to your feelings.... Only you know the answer, but when something is nagging at my thoughts, there's usually some unfinished business that is trying to surface. Be gentle with yourself and be the parent you never had.

Never feel safe enough to sleep

That's criminal and predatory. If that happens again, please contact the police. Nobody should put up with abuse. Not sure about your current situation, but I'd get a lock for the door and put bottles or similar on your window ledges. Get a dog. Dogs are wonderful to snuggle with...

Please help me feel less alone - 'flashback'/deja vu type episodes to nightmares

Are you having deja vu of an actual life experience? or, is it just dream? You have no control over your dreams. Many of us here have had very bizarre, terrifying dreams and even after death experiences while awake. If you can distinguish between real and "dream", you're clearly not crazy.

    Nortriptyline experience?

I loved the beautiful dreams, but I soon realized that I wasn't getting any nourishing sleep. Two weeks in, I threw in the towel. As for depression, I don't think I was depressed at the time. I'd trust your gut. You've experienced it before and know how it works. Take a pass if that...

Why do people stop their medication cold turkey?

I've done it too, but usually when I was having some really bad side effects. It's more like I ramped down fast as I'd usually take a reduced amount when the withdraw was rocky but after the side effects have been reduced.

    Propranolol

I know. Just be grateful they are available. Also, be prepared for them to either not work or even make things worse. Unfortunately, it's a trial and error thing although the better pdocs have an intuitive sense for what will work or not. I remember getting a very hard sell from...

    Propranolol

Good for you. btw, most of these meds have some pretty scary side effects in the small print. Docs avoid telling you because the placebo effect. However, if you start experiencing something, it's good to cross reference the side effects for your meds. Doctors are smart and well...

    Propranolol

Ha, yeah, you remind me of when I was 19-20. I was really obsessing over losing my hair. I ran into this shampoo that turned my scalp a bright red and itchy. My hair thinned out so bad that you could see my scalp. Fun times. I'm 54 now and have a thick head of hair. I also take...

    Gaba. does it help you?

Yes! It works. Although why can be puzzling: It's too large to pass through the blood/brain barrier, so some of our more rational pdocs are skeptical. I suspect it calms our "second brain" which is our digestive system which has a knock on effect. It can be subtle, but it's definitely...

Does seroquel help get rid of flashbacks?

I've been taking 200mg of Seroquel for 14 years (?, can it be that long). For me, it really has no effect on PTSD or even makes it a little worse. The hypnotic effect makes it harder for me to wake out of a PTSD dream. The original reason for taking it was because I was severely agitated...

    Jolting awake!

The speculation is that is an evolutionary hold over from times when we slept in the tries like our closest relative the bonobos still do. They even make a nest and a pillow to sleep in. When we sense we are falling, we wake up rapidly presumably to catch ourselves before we fall.

Should i change my sleeping hours?

I live with Dominicans and they just fall over and sleep when they need to. Usually, muttering something like "tengo sueno" (I have sleep) and it's simply understood that the person will be unconscious for awhile. If you can sleep, sleep. Enjoy.

    Tense While Sleeping?

I'm late to this thread, so sorry if I hit a discordant note. When I was having bad migraines, I started to have bizarre experience with white light that took away my pain. They are consistent with after death experiences, but who knows. However, it sparked a spiritual awakening that I've...

    Obsessive fear of being abusive

I think that is one of the root causes of abusive behavior. The person fears abuse and so projects it on the people around them such that "other people's abusive behavior" is real to them. They fight fire with fire and become abusers themselves. It usually spins into an escalating storm...

    Terrible nightmares about men

I've learned to wake myself "all the way" after such a nightmare. Turn on the lights, walk around, even write about something until sleep catches up to me again. If I don't and I just try to go back to sleep, then I seem to suffer from a lingering cognitive hangover that taints my reality...

Is being a prepper feeding ptsd paranoia?

I actually go the other way. I think people are so invested in their home that they are reluctant to abandon it when they should. I live at the altitude of 9 feet in a major hurricane route. My motto is to evacuate early and often. I own nothing that I'm not willing to lose. I'd be...

    Any advice for managing nightsweats?

Prazosin 5mg taken at bedtime Lamotrigine 50mg taken in the morning. I'm on others, but they really don't touch my PTSD or even make it worse.

I keep dreaming about my abuser... is this normal?

I've been divorced for 12 years, and I still have dreams that I'm still married. I wake up in a panic and dripping in sweat. I need to turn on the lights and wake myself up to break the grip of the dream. I've had to go as far as turning on my computer and looking at my divorce decree to...

Breakup triggered disturbing dream from childhood, help.

I find writing to be very therapeutic. Stephen King said (in his book on writing) that building a story was like uncovering a fossil with a toothbrush. Little by little, he would expose the story. He didn't know the ending and sometimes he'd have sympathy for characters hoping that things...

    Disturbing violent/sexual nightmares

You may want to ease up on the processing. Only you know your tolerances, but I likened it to draining reservoir. Sure you could blow up the dam and let the water drain in a destructive, overwhelming flood. After all, it would have been better if you never built that dam to hold back your...

Stabbed my abuser in my dream

Good for you. I've had those turning points as well. That is, when I'm able to start to mentally resist the abuser in my dreams.

    Any advice for managing nightsweats?

You have my sympathy as it is definitely no fun. I'd try to sleep in a warmer room, so you can have less layers to allow the sweat to evaporate. I'm in south florida, so I often sleep with nothing or just a sheet. I can pop off the sheet off to let any sweat evaporate. I find that I...

    Adrenals - insomnia - advice?

I'm not a doc; I'm more like a dangerous know it all. But, somethings to ask your doc about might be: valproic acid and lamotrigine. On my favorite guinea pig (me), valproic acid worked but the dose was so high that I was hallucinating. They don't make smaller doses, so I plan to try...
