Thought this article is quite helpful, sums up latest research about nutrients beneficial to mental health, including some like B vitamins enhancing either antidepressant response rates or the onset of response to these medications. Plus link to Vitamin D deficiency and schizophrenia

Wonder whether increasing mental health issues in youth could be related to junk diets? Plus lot of people have low vitamin D levels.

Awesome article; I've bookmarked it.

I think a natural, "whole" diet is great, however, I think that when your body is extremely deficient in certain nutrients, a balanced diet isn't enough. (That's why doctors mega-dose vitamin B's, D, and so on in cases of extreme deficiency.)

I understand that it can indeed be best (at times) to do this sort of thing under medical supervision, but holistic doctors who would truly know the ins and outs of every facet of nutrition are just about as hard to find as a purple hippopotamus! That is, don't let lack of access to a doctor prevent your supplementation. It can take a bit of detective work, but you can indeed learn about supplements on your own. Just be sure to take it slow, listen to your body, and be sure to check for all possible interactions (there are websites dedicated to this!)

Thanks for posting this, Lizio.

My T recently made it very very clear to me that she wanted me to see a psychiatrist to get on medication or get a PRN script for something to take in crisis. I thought about it a lot, had something of a personal revelation, and decided instead to overhaul my diet (by almost exclusively cooking at home and ensuring my nutrition was balanced and contained as many whole foods as possible), quit smoking, and exercise every day. Fortunately, I love to cook, have a ton of knowledge in nutrition, and have two dogs to motivate me to exercise daily. :)

Anyway, it seems to be working extremely well. I am no longer suicidal and feel my mood has greatly improved in general.
