Understanding…​

I know you’re hurt, confused, angry and sad.
And I try to understand…
Unspeakable and unfair horrors you’ve had to endure
And I try to understand…
You’re unable to distinguish what is real or just a pattern in your life
And I try to understand…
The pain and sorrow inside consumes you
And I try to understand…
The scars are there and unfortunately can’t be erased
And I try to understand…
You feel the need to run away from the present to escape your past
And I try to understand…
My words and feelings trigger your emotions like a fuse to a bomb
And I try to understand…
You feel uncomfortable around me, our home and our children
And I try to understand…
You believe nothing is ours, it’s yours or mine
And I try to understand…
My attempts to protect you trigger perceptions of control
And I try to understand…
Your world is shattered
And I try to understand…
You don’t need to face these demons on your own
I’d like you to understand…
I’ll always be here for you, I’ll stand by your side
I’d like you to understand…
You are my best friend with whom I can confide
I’d like you to understand…
Take the ring and the vows and put them aside if that’s what you need
I’d like you to understand…
I can be a trusted friend, just a shoulder to cry
I’d like you to understand…
I won’t judge or attempt to make you feel guilty of your emotions
I’d like you to understand…
Please turn around and don’t run away

I hope you sent that to your wife. I sent a similar one that I wrote for my BF to him and it helped him see that I am on his side and I do understand, but I also need him to understand a few things about me.
