“Groups for anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideology had significantly higher absolutist indices than the control group. Additionally, the absolutist index for the suicidal ideation forum was significantly higher than those for both the anxiety and depression forums.”

‘All-or-Nothing’ Thinking More Common in People with Anxiety, Depression, and Suicidal Ideation

Wow, all or nothing thinking affects mental health pretty strongly.

This is interesting. I fit the bill on this study more than I like. I wonder if perfectionism is another issue for those of us who struggle with black and white thinking? It can also throw me into the depths of despair if I can’t meet what I see as best. I have to work really hard at not judging things as either right or wrong, truth or lie etc. In this, as I have gotten older, I have learned to be more gracious and fair in my attitudes...but I still have my moments. Thanks for sharing, @Justmehere

I just recalled from high school an English teacher of mine who scolded us for using two words in essays.... always and never.
She said to stay away from writing or thinking in those terms because it was too extreme and dramatic. Of course, those words are used a lot but maybe they indicate two poles of opposites that are used by perfectionists?? and often with an exclamation point after the word is used to add the dramatic effect. Dunno, it just came to mind.
