Anyone Have Any Weaning Off Effexor Stories?

I decided that I'm done with my Effexor.

I've been on it for a year and a half and have noticed very little difference. I also take Tegretol for seizures and my psychiatrist tells me that these two medications do not interact well because the Tegretol decreases the effectiveness of the Effexor. So, because of this, I am on the highest dose of Effexor and cannot go any higher.

Besides, I have found that my biggest gains in my recovery have not come from medication but have come from therapy, EMDR and also the sense of security I get from my German Shepherd, who accompanies me everywhere.

So, I am attempting to wean myself off my Effexor. I have had brain zaps in the past, but that was when I first started taking my Effexor and wasn't always taking it exactly on time. But so far, I haven't experienced any this time around and I am on day 5 of weaning off.

I have read that Effexor is very hard to get off of but so far I am finding it okay. I am opening the capsules and taking out small amounts of granules every single day and then putting the capsule back together. I think this is the easiest way to do it as you aren't decreasing by very many milligrams each day. It may take longer but if I avoid brain zaps or discontinuation syndrome, then everything's golden.

Have you gone off Effexor and how has it worked out for you?

I haven't taken Effexor and so haven't had to stop taking it. If you search this forum, there are threads specifically about Effexor, some of them may have weaned off of it. I do want to ask you - are you coming off of the Effexor with your doctors guidance? Will they be replacing the Effexor with something else?

Please contact your psychiatrist so that you can down dose off of Effexor properly. I stopped it cold turkey without my doctor's advice. It was horrible and I ended up with the left side of my face drooping for three months. At the time I also stopped two other medications at the same time. Please be careful.
