This is actual size of the artwork.*A portion of the excess black has been cropped* This is an update for my current art project in progress. About 12 hours of concentration and focus went into my etching today and tonight as I found a better tool to make my art. Hopefully I finish it up before I burn out on etchings again.
The Bad: The purple color is quite hard at time to distinguish from black (the scratch off). I frequently miss the mark and have to attempt fixing the errors. My tools aren't doing a fantastic job anymore, the needles are dulling at a steady rate, so I spent quite a bit of time today finding the perfect tool. The new tool has a strange tip which makes me hold the tool in an awkward manner, it gave me two blisters tonight. The quality of the paper is crap, the black is difficult to scratch off for your average scratch paper and that has caused a few tearing accidents. Also the random color mattering underneath looks stupid how they did it, it is also having a profoundly bad effect on the overall look of the art piece. Between the dark purple issue and the dull tools, it is very easy to overdo the scratching and go straight through the black scratch off and tear the colored paper. You can see these errors on my etching, they are the small white spots that stick out, fortunately it is possible to touch these up with a pen or something up after I am done. I also had to buy a magnifying glass.. my eyes are sore.
The Good: Evolution of the style. In an attempt to put variation on my style of art, I managed to give rise to some interesting patterns, shapes and integration of more complex structures has had quite an impact on the piece. Some lines were built thicker to make them stand out and not look so compact. What I lacked in fine accurate lines, I more than made up for in variety of perspective techniques, bigger shapes/structures that tie into my typical line art seem to blend the geometric into organic like themes. I also have adopted a couple of ideas on how to use the smaller, fine and more common compact shapes or clump of shapes to accentuate and add depth and perspective to the abstraction going on with the more solid constructs. These larger forms also worked to separate the simple patterns and shapes that used to make up the bulk of the scratch art. Quite please with today's results.
Tomorrow I think I will work on making holes, tunnels and bridges. I should look into making better use of grid and lattice patterns. The overall technique is something you have to maintain or you will lose your creativity and end up doing the same techniques over and over... useful sometimes but not here. The constant shifting of following certain rules of drawing one second and then going against them the next is what makes for stunning effects. Perspective drawing has been a lot more useful in this project than previous ones, in fact most of the etching doesn't exist without perspective techniques.
