i to have nightmares, mainly consist of running away or drowning. I meditate by focusing on my breathing then i push thoughts out my head or i let a thought come into my head and then let it go. Sometimes I used Headspace (app for smartphone). This helped me with letting go of thoughts. I only downloaded the free version (10 days or might be 5 days cant remember). If that doesn't work I do muscle relaxation. Hope this helps.
