Black and white thinking

This is a struggle for me. I tend to be extreme in my thinking.

It's helped me in recovery from addiction, as I know I cannot gamble anymore & I stick to it.

In day to day life, however, it has caused me problems.

A good example of this is: 'Don't come on myptsd at all & deactivate my account' vs 'Check myptsd 100 times a day'

Can anyone relate? Does anyone have any tips on getting more balance?

You have to live with it. It can be done but everyone does it differently. I've come.to see now it's related to disassociation. I can only b&w think because of the disconnect. The other part of my brain is not available because my other part has it. The whole of what my thinking process would look like has never been available. For awhile I thought it was the hiding. The not knowing or blocking it all out. Like trying to play something before I have it fully memorized.

I can relate, I apply this black and white thinking in all areas of my life unfortunately. I'm either great at my job or if I do a single mistake than it means I'm incompetent and should quit before I'm fired. That friend is either my best friend or I guess it's not really my friend at all, etc. I try to look at how other people handle these types of situations and so I can better see how my attitude is wrong. At work, for example, I push through despite my mistakes because I see all my coworkers do the same and it keeps me balanced. :)
