I figure...

if it IS a flashback, and this shit actually happened... then it rates getting help with.

If it ISNT a flashback, but a delusion, or hallucination, or some kind of fear made manifest, that my mind is making up... then it rates getting help with.

So, either way? It rates help.

I found this thread through a search and wanted to resurrect it as it relates to a current question I have. I recently got some info via digging a little with family members (I also have no clue is my brain has “made up” the few flashbacks I’ve been struggling with for 20 years now) and the info I got disproves some of the details I remember, although supports the person and the probability of the content being real. But, the place I remember it happening in didn’t exist at the age I thought it was. So I’m wondering, do/can flashbacks be a mix of occurances jumbled together? Yet always appear consistent (though apparently wrong) as intrusive memories?
If I should start a new thread let me know- just figured you already started hashing this out. And I honestly am about to lose my mind with the “is this true or not?” debate in my own head.

“is this true or not?”

IMO if some things happened at the later age / different places and what not, does not disprove the whole thing? (Or the new info may be telling you something else happened, if not what you thought before, that may be worth looking into / looking into why would you conflate it with what you remembered, in the first place, or forgot about it).

I would reframe this to What of it is true, and for when, questions...
Instead of the black and white, all or nothing, ones.

The sub-conscious is a funny thing. Some of my worst flashbacks I disbelieved because my “bedroom” was a “hotel room”. This didn’t make sense until I finally remembered that we owned and lived in a hotel at the time. A country pub. We used the ground floor as our “home”. f*ck. It was easier not believing.

So....I hope I’m not taking this OT but has anyone had nightmares that are more like flashbacks? ... I just wonder if I’ve got an overactive imagination.

I get flashbacks during the day of dreams I had the night before. Sometimes, I don't remember the dreams for most of the day. Then, late in the day, I start getting little flashbacks of what my dreams were. Often, but not always, I'll remember more of the dreams as the evening goes on. But they always start as flashbacks during the day. I always thought it weird -- who has flashbacks of dreams? But, for whatever reason, this seems to be how my mind has chosen to do processing.

I almost never get concrete memories, but I get pieces of the past, both visually and emotionally, mixed into whatever the dream is. Happens almost every night, and I'm positive that there's processing going on.

My t basically says Pay attention to whatever your brain is throwing at you and don't worry about how it is tossing stuff out,... so yep I would think they are related?
