Hi. I’m going through a bad patch right now and have joined these forums in the hope of finding some support and solidarity.

A few years ago I had a minor breakdown after years of bottling up all my trauma without even realising I was doing it. Things have been up and down since then. I’ve learned lots of self-care and coping skills, but I still have bad patches and I’m in one now. I’m just so mentally and emotionally exhausted from it all.

I’ve had private therapy in the past but can’t afford this now and NHS provision in my area is terrible. I can use my work EAP to get some free therapy but I’m still working up to phoning them and I’m nervous about seeing someone new (I don’t exactly trust people easily).

It took me a long time to acknowledge that my childhood was traumatic, as I had a nice house and nice things. But my dad was traumatised from his own childhood and was depressed, unpredictable and quick to anger. I’ll save the details for another thread but suffice to say I grew up in a home where I didn’t feel relaxed, safe or able to make mistakes, and where children were expected to control their emotions but adults weren’t.

I’ve experienced some other traumas including CSA but won’t go into all the details now. Thanks for reading.

Welcome :)

My dad had a traumatic childhood, but he totally lost his humanity. I like to think, now, that PTSD is proof that I will learn to know better.

I'm sorry you're in a rough patch, but I'm glad you found this forum. I hope it helps you grow and get toward your recovery quickly (and safely)

welcome to the forum. Great job reaching out here to get some support. Know that we are here cheering you on to make that call. It is so hard to make the call, to start with someone new, but spiraling downwards is not a good option. Best wishes.

You have arrived at a great place for support, understanding, conversation, encouragement, and education. You have shared what so many of us also lived through. And most of us deal with fear and trust issues, too. Glad you are here. Post away and join the fray. Keep us posted as to your search for therapy care. It is most important that you find some support, preferably a trauma/PTSD professional. Welcome!

With the EAP I don’t get to pick the therapist but I get to see a private practitioner for free without having to wait. I’m sure if I say it’s for trauma they will refer to someone with the right experience (they can offer CBT and potentially EMDR for a decent number of sessions).

There’s also a low cost trauma clinic in my town but it’s unlikely I’ll qualify as I’m not on out of work benefits.

Okay I can’t for the life of me work out how to edit my posts! I’ve just looked at the low cost clinic and they have a six month waiting list so definitely scratch that. (And while I’m effectively on a low income due to paying off debts I wouldn’t want to take a place from someone with no alternative options.)

You won't be able to edit your posts here ;) unless you become a premium member, but that's that.

Don't you think you could benefit, though? You're one of the people who may need it? Even if you have to wait six months?

Good luck figuring this out! I'm glad you're working on it!
