I'm so sorry about your little bird. No words. Having had many birds, I know the uncertainty and concern that comes when a bird is sick. Have you switched him to a low-fat diet? High quality seed and fresh fruits and veggies would be in order. I hope the little bird will be able to pull through and you can reverse the liver damage.

I attempted to switch her to a new food as her symptoms improved. Now we’re back to the old food as I try to help her gain weight again. I was told to keep her off seeds by a vet for now. She isn’t usually on them anyway, but her pellet apparently didn’t have enough nutrients by itself so we were switching to a more natural one that the vet recommended. It smells nice, tastes a bit seedy (my bird only tries food once she sees me eat it, she must think I’m poisoning her :P).

She also has overlaying syndrome, so her calcium got depleted but she didn’t have enough vitamin A to reabsorb it, so I got her some palm oil as the vet recommended (organic) for a natural way to absorb some. Water vitamins made the issues worse somehow. So, her pellets are low in fat but I had oil to her food to help her with vitamin A to try to boost her immune system. I’m thinking about getting her some dandelion to help her even more.

She does need more exercise as she’s been in her little cage. Her liver probably started getting upset when she started getting several infections, and then everything seemed fine for a bit until I switched her to a smaller cage. (Tempory, because I was trying to keep her away from mildew in my room.) The smaller cage has plastic bowls that fit into the doorways. Apparently the pores were trapping bacteria and I got her sick again, and then she got the liver problem again.

Long story short, it has been complicated, but I am hoping she can hang in there while we figure this out. I know she was feeling a little better at least, because she had laid more eggs. She probably wouldn’t do that if she were sick? Though they were very thin eggs...

Female birds are difficult. I might ask her food company why they didn’t put the necessary vitamins in her food. Their fear might get me something useful at least

It was really funny because she was very casual about the shrimp but she looked so worried

Meanwhile I was thinking, “OH OKAY” because here I was thinking she was trying to grab some dropped chicken or something, but no, she just wanted to kiss a shrimp

And alert everyone that a shrimp needed saving I guess

Funny story:

A few years back I was doing a science™, and I was taking Nestle with me to combine her nightly walks with my cicada hikes.

Basically I was catching cicadas to take pretty pictures with. Long story short.

So, every time I found a cicada, I would stop off-duty Nestle and take pictures. Often pick them up and examine them under a UV for lab tattoos. (It was a range study).

I got really excited every time I heard one fly (can’t miss it, very loud, even the females).

One day I was walking Nestle during my science hike and heard a cicada and got excited. Suddenly Nestle jumped on the road, picked up a cicada, and brought it to me.

It fought back lol

It got a bit injured but she tried!!

It was way easier to pry out of her mouth than that squirrel though



Also she has great luck with finding bucks — unfortunately, it happened to be in the one area in the US where white tailed deer are known for actually mauling people and purposely destroying vehicles out of aggression (not exaggerating, never mess with a deer you don’t know! Lol) and all Nestle knew was that the buck should get a person-hiding-in-dark bark

I have a lot of stories of Nestle with larger animals lol

Mountain lions are fun guys, you can watch them eye children and dogs with wiggle pounce butts. Nestle’s not a fan but she’ll do an alarm bark at her own expense
