Just curious. I see many people swearing using something to the effect of "F*** it all", or "there was S**T everywhere". In my mind, I don't stop saying the word that has the *** in it. It makes no sense to me why people do this.

Would you prefer if they were trying to swear in a cleaver fashion they just used a polite word, the actual swear word or something else?

Personally, if I can, I try not to swear on the forums. I have on occasion, usually in my diary. I don't use **'s. It isn't hard to figure out the word I'm avoiding typing out, and I think most people just say it/read it as if it were spelled out.

Your thoughts?

I think I dont use the actual work-afraid of warning but not certain of rule-just out of courtesy to those who might be offended at my sailor language. My mother was a ragaholic...her favorite was MFing, C@@@Sucking, SOBing, no good Bast@@@. It was a mouthful. I admit that sometimes at the moment saying one BAD word out loud makes a statement...not so much in writing for me.

I read the word just the same, but it's easier to deal with. I find it less in my face. I didn't realise the forum put asteriks in automatically, as I always do it myself. Tend only to swear in my diary to vent anger/frustration. I think it's unecessary in other areas of the forum and could come across as attacking another member.

I'd prefer no curse words at all, but for me a letter plus *** is much better than the whole word.

I don't read the word as if it was all spelled out. Maybe because I don't use the words myself?

I still have a negative reaction (to me, curse words have associations of nasty, aggressive and uncontrolled behaviour) but it's like a dampening of the effect because I know what it's representing but the whole word isn't right there.

For me, Solara's examples are as bad as the exact words, though. Especially in capitals!

I try to be a lady but am guilty at times. 55% of the reading people see the whole word even if it is cut with asterisks.

I find this fact very interesting and have done many similar tests. Words written using numbers only. Of the 55% category the brain is able to decipher misspelled words as well. I wonder if anyone has done further research with PTSD?

Lumosity is a fun challenge of ourself. It is a memory exercise based on ones capacity daily.

I apologize if I have stressed anyone with my poor choice of words. It might be a fun exercise to use real words, instead of slang and truck driver 101. JMHO. Whitney
