random expletive over some personal frustration doesn't bother me a bit, and is sometimes even funny. Otherwise, someone needs to be handing out some pamphlets on manners.
This.

I think this point actually relates to the use of swear words on the forum. Swearing because of frustration, with yourself, PTSD, the situation you're in or something random like the 's*** weather' for example is okay. But once it's directed at someone else, then it becomes a whole different story, asterisks or full word it doesn't matter.

I understand the importance of not using cuss words, spelled out or beeped out. The sentiment is the same.

I understand that the word "rape" is troublesome for some, but I don't believe we should go down the path of not spelling out such words. What would be next? M*rd*r? (Murder). @ss@*lt? (Assault). Those words aren't as easily deciphered, yet can be just as upsetting to those who have been through those types of traumas.

I have one trigger word that isn't a cuss word, and while I have requested that people not use this word to describe me (when it rarely comes up, even though its never said to be mean), I never ask people to modify their vocabulary to eliminate the use of this word. I think it would give too much power to the word. If we're too worried about individual triggering words (aside from cussing) then I think it becomes a distraction from healing. Just my 2 cents!

PS I don't believe I've cussed since this thread.... Or at least I don't think I have! I'm honestly making an effort to not do it. So kudos to the poll starter!

I think it's a good thing to do. Cursing doesn't bother me personally, but I think it's a nice gesture toward those who might be offended...

Swearing doesn't bother me in the slightest. I just look on it as language - they're just words, as much as any other are. Though I did have an English teacher who walked into class a the beginning of one lesson on taboo language (every year), and merrily swore her way through the whole lesson, pretty much.

Oh, and I read the words as though they'd been written out fully. I'm very mildly dyslexic (comes out when I'm tired mainly), so the ones that have ! or @ marks instead of letters, I just can't read.

I do get that it upsets people though, so I try not to use it. My daily language when I'm on my own is bright blue.

There are words that upset me, but they're usually quite unconnected (apparently, I'm sure there's some connection somewhere), and seemingly innocuous. And I don't know them all, but keep finding new ones. To try to stop people using them would be a never ending, herculean task, and one that, frankly, I can't be bothered with!

I don't do it in front of people who would be offended, or those I don't personally know. But, being the angry person that I am, swearing is anger's lingua franca. And, sometimes, I can't even come-up with foul-enough swear phrases to match the anger, which, observed by others, is probably pretty amusing. ;)

I read what I see, asterisks and all. So I guess using the asterisks are kind of useless for my mind. I grew up with a mom who swore a lot and a dad who rarely ever did. I'm on the rarely ever side and there are certain swear words then others that are more harsh to me. I don't even like the swearing that goes on facebook. I'm not offended when someone swears, maybe just startled.

I agree. I'd never try to hurt or harm someone's feelings on here but I do curse occassionally to make me feel like I'm more in control of how I feel or to let out some frustration and believe it or not I feel better while also in the process making others laugh. It all depends on the frequency and severity of things to me. It's those kind of things that confuse you and build up lots of pressure and stress. I hope no one on here is like that though...
