Emdr After Effects?

Yesterday, my therapist and I did our first EMDR session. It went well, though I was exhausted after. S...

I have the same thing happen, depending on what trauma I delve into and which emotions I get in touch with. The hypersensitivity is scary because I'm easily triggered and it's dangerous to be driving like that. I don't have anyone that I feel comfortable asking to drive me though: I feel like a leper as it is.

Thanks Lucy. I did mean a litteral hot flash.
I know this is a really old thread that has been resurrected, but even now I don't know what a 'litteral hot flash ' is. Litteral as a part of literature? Flash as in lightening - bang/flash? This is an international forum. I do wish people would remember that in their posting ( and I am very tired and getting grumpy - it is after 2 am- I apologise if I upset anyone)

@Lucycat - a hot flash (also known as a hot flush) refers to a sudden onset of increased body temperature, resulting in sweating, discomfort, and reddened skin. They are usually a symptom of menopause, and are caused by fluctuations in hormonal activity.

So, 'literal hot flash' is a different way of saying "not metaphorical, but actual hot flash"

I am an EMDR therapist and would like to clear up a few misperceptions. EMDR was actually first designed to work with Vietnam vets who suffers with PTSD. The success rate in reducing symptoms was about 80%.
Since then, many protocols have been developed for various issues.
I use EMDR daily with most of my clients and am a consultant for other EMDR therapists.
Here is what I know. You can use EMDR safely every 3 days- and if you drink heavily or do recreational drugs you must be sober and clean for several days before.
If you are working on intense issues you will feel tired afterward. The first time I had it done on me I was exhausted but then my body adjusted and I have never experienced that again. However, I do a lot of trauma work and that can be exhausting and emotional every time for awhile.
When looking for an EMDR therapist please ask the following:
How much trauma work do you do
Do you work with PTSD
How often do you use EMDR
How long have you been using this method

Some therapists do not use it enough and are not proficient or don't understand PTSD. Your therapist should know your history and trigger points before using EMDR and should never let you leave in a high anxiety state, I have only had 3 people have bad reactions In 10 years of daily use and 2 of those had used drugs the day before and lied about it. If you do have a bad reaction, call your therapist immediately!!! They should get you right in to repair whatever happened. And I do believe that in trauma work, positive encoding and strengthening sessions must come first before ever hitting the trauma- especially with PTSD. There are a few exceptions to this-but should be evaluated by the therapist.
I hope this information helps clear up some issues.

Does the rate of suicide increase after EMDR sessions? I've had my first EMDR session yesterday and feel so much more depressed than before my session.

Please use all your supporters, calming skills (again, please ask if you need ideas), be in tune with your emotions and what is 'real' and what is 'then'.

Blow up the forum with all types.of.questions or recurring thoughts you need to sort out.

Please be aware and be well

I was trying to respond to your post. I've NEVER been on a chat room before. Anyway, I had my first session today and had questions about it because I was feeling tired and anxious here and there and thought, hmmm, I need to go to my safe place, I bet. I think my T forgot to tell me to do that. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR INFO!!

Denis Leary does a bit on NyQuil "It says right there on the bottle, 'may cause drowsiness.' It should say 'don't make any plans.'"
My T told me "Things will keep processing, and your reactions to people may change."
He *should* have said "You're going to remember EVERYthing you purposely forgot, and those you didn't even know you had in you. Your whole body will hurt. You'll be exhausted and spacey, and you may vomit. But then it'll feel oddly better....until it doesn't."
But it's different for everyone, so I'm sure he couldn't be that specific, lol. I just wish I had been better prepared. I'm glad for this forum, actually, and some other sites, for when it finally clicked for me to google "Hmmmm....could all this be because of EMDR?"
