I am almost two years free of my DV relationship. As of a about a week ago I was told that I have PTSD from that relationship and that useing EMDR treatment would be very good for me. I am wondering if anyone has PTSD from theirs as well. ? If you have used EMDR? My question is did it work for you. How did/do you like it? Is it or was it helpful for you ? Where you asked to take meds while do this treatment. My PTSD from this relationship is so bad that I normally don't sleep and in fear at all times. ( along with quite a few other things. ) ... and I just want to get back to my life... please help !!!! anything that you know about this treatment would be helpful ..

Thank You for you time
Ashley

Hi Ashley. Welcome and I'm glad you found your way here.

This is a new community of people who have struggled with the after effects of domestic violence. May of us have PTSD including myself. It can be a horrible experience. I haven't tried EMDR myself but I know where you can get lots of info and connect with others who have found it very helpful. My Domestic Violence is part of a network of website support groups. One is specifically about ptsd and it's treatments. It would be a very helpful place for you to check out. It's called My PTSD. There is a link to it in the network drop-down menu. There people are dealing with ptsd from a variety of causes.

You'll still have this place to connect with others that are having issues such as ptsd that stems from domestic violence. There are some unique damage that is caused from having someone in such a pivotal place in our lives be so cruel to us. You're not alone in this.

I was diagnosed with PTSD about 3 years ago. Serious abuse in childhood, nervous breakdown in 2003, in and out of the hospital. I've been in traditional therapy the last 12 years and my last therapist I would basically see once a month just to check in. I knew something was missing. By some miracle in April I came across this agency that treats trauma and found a wonderful therapist who treats with EMDR. I won't lie and say it's easy. It's not. At least for me it hasn't been. She spent the 1st 2 months getting my history and we came up with a list of "Target" to work on and started doing EMDR in July. This is the 1st time I'm really getting in touch with dormant emotions of abuse. I bought a great book by Francine Shapiro called "Getting Past Your Past", "Take control of your life with Self-Help Techniques". Shapiro is the person who came up with EMDR.

No, you don't have to take medications, although I do as I see a psychiatrist for bipolar disorder and ADHD. For the 1st time I'm trying to cut being on so many meds. Some sessions are grueling and it takes me at least a day to recover. But I have hope. If you have PTSD EMDR is supposedly the treatment to use. Good luck on finding a great therapist if you decide to pursue EMDR.

Hey Ashley,

I am new here, but I have been treated with EMDR in the past and it definitely worked for me (in being able to process some repressed stuff). With that said, I was not properly diagnosed at that time- and I feel that one needs to ultimately be ready to process some of the repressed feelings, thoughts, and memories (as well as being ready to accept support for what comes out). I plan on doing it again now that I am properly diagnosed CPTSD. Feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions about the process or anything at all. I am happy to help.

Hi. Will you help me understand: What do you mean by "repressed"? You have memory but avoid feelings? OR You have feelings, but no or little memory?
Is it only a rumor or random opinion that EMDR works best with newer traumas?
Not so well if trauma from long ago? Not so much with blocked/forgotten/repressed traumas?
What do you, think based on your personal experience? Thanks.

Hi. I've used the term "nervous breakdown" myself, about myself. How did you recover? How long did it take? If you don't mind sharing, that is. Thanks.
