In fact, God does, or should I say they do. The Judaic God does. I'm not familiar with the Qur'an, but as far as I know, Allah does as well. Both religions are based on the precept that the religion in question is the only right or true or valid one.
I think you could make that argument for Catholicism, Baptist, etc. Catholics don't recognize marriage outside of their religion! So, if you are Catholic and marry a Methodist, the Catholic Church does not recognize your marriage which means if you have children they are bastards!! Wow! If you are Baptist and aren't saved, you don't go to heaven. Really?

Isn't that all a form of self righteousness? A form of true validation to themselves that 'they' hold the key to eternity? Gosh, I hope not because I have some kick ass Jewish friends, some killer Catholic friends, and some Baptists that I really enjoy a beer with and I sure hope I get to spend eternity with them.

I agree with you Rumors, but we have to accept the fact that the Christian religion says it is the only valid one, and Islam says it is the only true religion. When I say this I don't agree or disagree with the religions or their basic tenets. I'm not saying I am a Christian or a Muslim or an atheist, or anything. My opinion is entirely immaterial. But the adherents will act and react according to these 'truths'

It's like saying Harry Potter killed Voldemort, whether I agree with killing or not. It's just what the texts say.

This is a clash between two forms of fundamentalism on the one hand, and between any kind of fundamentalism and humanism on the other hand.

People make a choice to harm others, not God. To call for the death of others in the name of God is not holy or just. I will defend my life if presented in a life and death situation but, not for the sake of fanatics who see me as a devil or second-class citizen because I don't agree with their views. I think it is very selfish as it is arrogant those individuals believed they were above God's law 'thou shalt not kill' yet, they believed they had the right to kill... Religion and government hide a lot of sociopaths and control freaks.

I pick humanism. It gets me through the day. I can handle fundamentalism as long as it isn't fanatical which Islam has become in some circles. However, so has Christianity just ask the crazies from Westboro.

Unbelievably scary world we live in!! Too tolerant in some respects and too quick to judge in others. There is no happy medium.

Wow...I really can't believe some of the things I've read in this thread...This complaining about mosques being built etc...What is your opinion of the US having military bases in their countries? Be that as it may, most of the comments here are incredibly ignorant and it saddens me that we can't have a real, honest discussion. As far as I recall, there is plenty of violence in the Bible too....Does that make all Christians fanatics? No. As for the death tolls, in modern times. I think Christianity actually takes the cake (pardon my turn of phrase)...Think of all the genocides "Christian" nations are responsible for...The Germans in what is now Namibia; the Germans again in WWII...The colonizers of the Americas (and other places)...So, all I'm saying is, let's not get into these kinds of comparisons. It won't reflect well on either side.

Reallydown,
We are having a real discussion. As for your ignorant comment, you are exemplifying exactly why there are fanatics. Unless everyone believes YOUR point of view, they are ignorant. No one here is disputing that Christianity is equally violent when put into the hands of any fanatic. However, we are discussing how people view their religion as the only right and valid religion in their mind hence leading them to do fanatical things like blow up little children in Boston in the name of Islam. WTF?

As for your comment about having military bases in other countries???? Really? What does that have to do with religious based ideology and fanaticism? That is a completely separate issue. It has nothing to do with the religion but since you bring it up, I thank God the United States has been the peacekeepers in the world. We have, and remain, in countries where we have formed strong relations to retaliate and snuff out terrorist activities across the world. Is it perfect, no, but I am guessing that none of us are either. Ask the Japanese how thankful they were for our military presence following the tsunami. Ask South Korea how thankful they are right now of our military presence because of the fanatical North Korean. Are there countries where we have a presence that some may not like? Absolutely, but we do FAR more good than bad. Instead of being critical of the measure our military and country take to keep us, and the rest of the free world safe, I suggest you take a long look around and pick another country that exceeds the United States in humanitarian deeds. There aren't any. I am proud not ashamed of our presence in the world, nor would I ever use that as an example of wrong doing in THIS world when there are terrorists out there who would take YOUR very life in the name of THEIR God because they feel like YOU are bad. Scary.

Rumors,
I support your right and choice to hate. For me I hated for so many years after 9/11 that it personally ate me up. That's why I cannot hate. I understand where your hatred comes from and your feelings are valid.
Laurie

Albatross,
I never said that anyone mentioned hate before I posted what I did. Let me explain. When I said I have a different take on the whole situation I meant that I was more focused on those directly impacted. When I wrote about hate it was in context to me not anyone else. I was surprised that after hating the 9/11 hijackers for years and then letting it go that I had no hatred on my part for these two terrorists. That is all I meant.

It is unfortunate that someone who had been missing since March, was wrongly accused, yes. But since the bombing occurred in April, he was accused "in absentia". It is hard to say at this point how long his body has been in the water. This student was missing, since mid to late March.

Rumors,
My comment is based in fact, not ignorance. I believe you've confused me with, well, you. You said: "Unless everyone believes YOUR point of view, they are ignorant." Not so. Nothing in my comment suggests that. Having said that, not everything is open to any kind of interpretation one sees fit. Some things are facts, not a matter of opinion. But, as John Kerry said, I suppose Americans are free to be ignorant. I hardly think that [particular freedom is one anyone else in the world envies.

I am not sure what my post and the previous discussions have to do with Japan and Korea. I referred to US bases in Islamic countries, as Islam was what was being discussed. If you can't see the connections between what's going on, and US foreign (and economic) policy, you are seriously deluded.

Further, you said: "However, we are discussing how people view their religion as the only right and valid religion in their mind hence leading them to do fanatical things like blow up little children in Boston in the name of Islam. WTF?" Oh, so when the US blows up innocent children, it's ok, because it's in the name of freedom and democracy, right?

Are you proud of the Iraq war, then? Are you proud of the Vietnam war and the indiscriminate use of agent orange, from which children are still being born with horrible defects? Are you proud of the US involvement in bringing to power (back in 1973) the fascist dictator Pinochet (in Chile)? What about Nicaragua? What about the fact that the US has failed to sign on to/ratify various international treaties (like the one on the rights of the child, for example)? Or to ban the use of weapons like landmines or cluster bombs. I could go on. It's true that no country is perfect though. Anyway, I'll stop there and only add that I suspect you've had a little too much kool aid of the kind that Fox News spews. Cheers.
