Fyi: Long Joe Paterno Interview Going Around The Internet Today...

...people here might want to avoid clicking on. I got a page or so in, reading, and had to bail. You've heard it all before, if you were ever abused: not his responsibility, society is to blame, people are making way too big a deal, etc.

Unless you want to end up in a fight with a bunch of enabler-enablers, anyway.

I live close enough to State College to have what amounts to a news blackout with most of this story-Jo Pa is a godling here. The previews on that interview didn't even make the local news, newspapers, blogs, graffitti in the bus station toilet, whatever and will not- it's amazing. Even as he disallows the victims their pain, Paterno's fans disallow him his culpability even in being close enough to this case to HAVE to register a denial. Seriously- when it first broke, they interviewed people sobbing 'We love you, Joe, hang in there!', then nothing, now nothing connecting the guy even vaguely-even in denials with his part in aiding a pedophile.

Makes the top of my head want to pop off. I managed to see the interview announced on the national news, of all places, decided a miss was in order since my head needs to stay where it is.

Joe and enablers like him are as much of the problem as the perps themselves. Not the same kind of guilt, but guilty none the less. I remember while I was young, being told that we have a moral and legal obligation to stop and aid in an emergency (such as a car accident)- when did we change our standards so that it only applies to having to do it only if we elect to? It seems to me that this poor kid had a much greater emergency than a damn car accident. And Joe Paterno did nothing, absolutely nothing- to aid a child. And he gets to keep his retirement??? Grrrrrr. There are no words for the level of hatred in which I have for people/enablers like him.

I'm not a football fan, but I understand why some people might go "Hey, okay, he did a few wrong things, but just look at the rest of his life, his achievements!" He was up for the Congressional Medal of Freedom, maybe, woah.

But some things you do are...so shameful they can wreck a whole life's worth of good things and good will. I would say knowing about only one child rape and keeping that knowledge in-house to protect a program or project or company or whatever, rather than going to the proper authorities, would accomplish that, brought to light. Never mind several.

You know about something like that, you call 9-1-1, you don't call the CEO and start a conversation about how do we retire this guy least embarrassingly for us. And if you do the latter, you better get that medal and the gold watch and a funeral with public honors before that story breaks, or you ain't getting them.

Sorry.

He was front page on the Washington Post on Sunday... It made me sick to even buy the paper just because I had to see his face, grrr.

When the story first broke, there were 1,400 supporters rallying outside his house. My brother just said "yep, there's 1,400 future pedophiles." Pretty much... I wonder if these students would feel any different if their own child was violently raped and life shattered. Would they still be sympathetic toward those who knew but did nothing to stop it?

Hee-yes, it's an option I've often wished we could have here, the 'Like a WHOLE H*ll of a lot'.

OH Lord, the one thing we DID see on the local news here is the endless stream of well-wishers trapsing off to Paternos front door with flowers, fervently clapsing hands with his wife as the dear soul came to the door. OI! He has an awesome, awesome press agent, although requires none since the news crews do it for him. It's endlessly nauseating, listening to the interviews, too-GOD!

I agree, geesh- I just read in the paper about my OWN ex-doc, get this- he was an awesome do-gooder, gave to the poor, had medical clinics in the poor section of town, one of those rocks of society you read about. He was also turned in by his own daughter for child porn, then confessed to acts through out his career. Yea.Kind of negates the whole GOOD thing across the board, as in forever. He's just some nameless schlup, too, so no-one stepping up to excuse HIS behaviour.

This is a slippery slope for the entire country, this public venerating of Paterno to the point of disallowing him his part in a pedophile's 20 year string of trophies. I'm a little frightened, to be honest because any other celebrity would have been brought crashing down by now. If anything, we're generally incredibly hard on our public figures once the pendulum of public opinion begins to swing the other way. Not Paterno! What IS it with this guy? You can't say it's 'Football', there have been other notable figures who managed to shoot themselves in the career through some hideous misadventure, and not one was connected with something as just plain awful as a pedophile.
