Grounding 101

learning to love myself and not worry about what others think of me has improved my quality of life tremendously.

(((Cath))), for me, you have hit the nail right on the head. I didn't begin to heal until I eased up and was kinder to myself. Once I did that I began to make huge progress.

Although at times I still fall back I keep reminding myself I do deserve love. I still have some work to do as well though.

I needed all my grounding skills today when I went to the hospital and was told I have to have a double procedure - Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy!! I don't want some bloke sticking a tube up my but but it has to be done!

I was in shock when the doctor told me he wanted to do the colonoscopy and the room started to spin but I managed to stay grounded and made a joke through the tears which made him laugh. It helped that the doctor and nurse were so gently and caring too.

This will be a real test for me.

Bloom,
It is great you didn't sink as far nor as long as you used to do. I am sorry to hear you are feeling vulnerable at present.

I have an inner dissociation-scale from 0 till 100.
This is an interesting idea Fireball. Thanks.

Finding 5 things that are blue....then 5 that are green....the yellow....repeat as long as possible/necessary.
Colours are still my first port of call and work the most for me.

all five of your senses
I find that helpful too DGN!

Once a skill becomes automatic, then eventually you'll be able to call it up right after those times, then right at the end of the episode, then at the middle...then at the start...until you're having good internal contact with your emotions and you're able to head it off much earlier.
Very well said and described.
This is progress for me and it only occurred to me when I got home how well I had done
Wonderful CraftyCath!

radical self-compassion.
It is so very helpful isn't it! So darn hard and takes so much hard work but worth it.

Back to the basics as I've been pretty symptomatic for several days. But I don't sink as far nor as long as I used to.

Sometimes we need to be reminded of the basics. I get complacent sometimes and then something comes along and trips me up but like you Bloom, I don't sink so far and spring back faster.

It isn't 'one step forward and 3 back' any more but small steps with the occasional trips.

We, my friends, are doing just fine.
