Halloween?

UK here, it's much less of a thing, though it's gotten bigger as the years have gone on.

When I was a child, maybe 8 years of age, my Nana told me about Halloween when we were staying with her one time. Bless her, she had me and the girl next door go round trick or treating, most of the neighbours had no idea what Halloween was 😂

Just been for a walk locally, seen a few houses with some decorations out. Nothing compared to in America I'm sure. Nice to see anyway.

I'm in the United States and I adore Halloween. I use scary and dark things to help validate the fear and terror I feel on a regular basis. The real monsters are people. But I get flack from my church community for loving and celebrating Halloween because they think it's Satan's day and think only deluded immature Christians celebrate it. I just like dressing up in a costume, trick or treating and getting candy, etc it's all lighthearted fun. I don't like scaring kids so I don't usually do gory costumes unless it's a party for adults. Churches do trunk or treats which is the same idea as trick or treat except people decorate the trunk of their car and hand out candy. The church ones are pretty wholesome and family friendly usually but they have an agenda of "evangelizing on the darkest night of the year" or whatever.

Roland, I find it interesting about your church comments. My church has a Fall Festival including Trunk or Treat. There, not all but several use scary or gory decorations. No big deal. Kind of like Santa at Christmas. Secular representations versus strictly religious.

I'm hoping that members from other countries chime in. My curiosity kind of originated from Christmas being discussed in the forum in the past. Some posted pictures of their home decorations and they sometimes were so very different from what I'm used to.

Bet your bottom dollar that they don't know November 1st is All Saints' Day or what that has to do with it.
Oh they have no idea because they're a very watered down version of Protestant

It's even funnier to me when they have regular Halloween trunk decorations. Isn't the whole point to have a non scary, safe, family friendly alternative? Lol but whatever. They really annoy me.

I will say trunk or treats are easier to do with toddlers, less walking, and more reward.

Most Christmas and Easter festivities are Pagan and the church either doesn't know about it or they rebranded it to be Christian and are okay with it. So it's odd that Halloween doesn't have any real rebranding it's just Halloween-but-worse. But oh well. At least it was fun.

We literally invented Hallowe'en, so it's quite a big deal where I come from.

I'm a druid, though, so I celebrate it as its old self, Samhain. Which is functionally the same as most other people, but with a midnight bonfire and some chanting on top of a hill.

I wasn't able to celebrate with my kids this year, though, as I'm currently a bit busy holding the line against an invading army.

Literally.

So, I spent it getting messaged updates on how my kids' guising (our tradition of going to people's houses and performing a song, dance or joke in return for sweets) was going, while listening to enemy artillery trying to wipe this village off the map.
