Has Anyone Else Read Complex-ptsd From Surviving To Thriving By Peter Walker?

Hello, I am new here. :) I did try to read all the rules and I think it is ok to ask questions on t...

Hi, I can relate to so much of what you've said here. I'm a wife and mother in my early 40s. I'm a survivor of childhood trauma. I have developmental PTSD or complex PTSD. I've spent years in therapy and I've tried many, many different modalities, including: EFT, FasterEFT, hypnotherapy, EMDR, Traumatic Release Exercises (TRE), network chiropractics / Network Spinal Analysis (NSA). I'm currently working with a Neurotherapist who is assisting me with Neurofeedback. It's early days in my Neurofeedback treatment, but from what I've experienced so far, I'm very hopeful that I may finally get what I've been seeking for a very long time from this work.
Cheers, Jen

I have had a terrible time trying to read books for the last 7 years or so, but I've discovered audio books/ podcasts, etc.! Wonderfully helpful, as I can also work (laundry/ floors/ cooking/ getting ready/ bath etc) at the same time sometimes. I thought I wouldn't be able to absorb it but I can, especially when I relate.

Also I need to write down in one place what helps.

Hey @Recovery4Me , what a sweet status update of yours, "Home is where the heart thrives". :) Yesterday I saw a billboard with 26 hearts on it (I counted :inlove: ). ((((((((R4Me))))))))))

Finding pete walkers website has been extroadinarily helpful for me. I relate as having developmental trauma rather than shock traumas. For me his website has been about the best set of info I've come across.

I did read his book a few years after finding his site. It's badly written, most all the info I found helpful to me is on his site. I didn't feel I gained anything much from reading the book. Like I say, badly written, very repetitive. If I'd have read the book before finding the website I think I'd have had a very different view of him.

To Recovery4Me, I have C-PTSD and I'm pretty disgusted the way it gets renamed every time a new DSM comes out. I know that under DSM-4 it was called DESNOS and even though I won my disability case I'm not real sure, I think under DSM-5 it may now be UTSRD or something but the SSA grants disability as if it were the same as shock trauma but I had a strong IME report which made a lot of the difference. Then there's the VA which seems to be headed in the direction of declaring that C-PTSD is just SMI so they don't have to pay for therapy, THAT'S just disgusting! My late mother was a "cluster B" nightmare (ASPD, NPD, BPD) and I would really hope at some point the the CPS's and courts come out with some mechanism stronger, more accessible to children and more relevant than TROs which are useless against a psychopath (in other words some way for the child to get out of the family before unrecoverable damage is done). I'm so messed up I can't get a wink of sleep without taking a strong antipsychotic so go figure. (I apologize if I've used too many abbreviations but I figure you'll need to understand them sooner or later anyway.)

As for Belinda what I'm looking for is a book that can successfully guide MY THERAPIST (and that HAS to be a trauma specialist by the way, if I'd understood that I would have saved myself about a decade of essentially worthless therapy) whether I understand it or not. I've looked at the equivalent book by Courtois and Ford and I just didn't see the level of specificity compared to Walker's book. Now having said that my current situation is my finances are forcing me to get my therapy on Medicare. I have a good therapist who does EMDR and follows Jim Knipe's book for that therapy (among other works). In a perfect world I'd probably look for a trauma therapist who can follow Walker's book (there are some guides on his website to help you find one, unfortunately none of them take Medicare). Whatever you do remember we're "early days" working through this since C-PTSD has only been a recognized diagnosis since 1992, unfortunately for me by then my mother had done all the damage she could and had already been dead for about 5 years.

I read it and digested it then read it again and it has totally changed my life. I am now free from the constant triggering and reacently stayed so calm infront of an extremely aggressive woman who only months ago I would have reacted violently towards in my own bid to defend myself. Will never thank this guy enough

I did just read this book is the first book I've gotten on complex post-traumatic stress I've had been misdiagnose...
Susan, I just started reading this book yesterday on Kindle. My therapist told me last week I had Complex-PTSD. I've just returned to this site and saw another book which lead me to this one. I have a hard time staying focused on reading anything these days, but can't put this book down. I am soaking it up. What I want to tell you is I also have a BP1 diagnosis. Wasn't dx'd until after age 50 and am currently on several meds for this. Will see my psych doc tomorrow, but he's not interested in my PTSD and told me that's what my therapist is for. He's there for my meds. However, my therapist doesn't think I have bipolar at all or ADHD for that matter so as I go thru this book, do EMDR with my therapist it will be interesting to see where all this will lead as I recover. It took me years to accept the bipolar diagnosis and 10+ years with other therapists and 3 other psych docs drilled it into me that I had to accept it, so I came to terms with it. Now, I have to once again change my thinking.
